I'm part exchanging my current car this coming Friday and I'll call the insurance company to change the cars over on the policy. This means that the car I am buying won't be insured until Friday morning, so how do I tax the new car?

If I try to tax it online in advance the process will check if the car is insured, which it isn't, but my insurance company tells me it can take up to 7 days for the DVLA database to be updated to reflect the new insurance policy.

You can phone them to tax on the day (or in advance)

Ensure that you take your documents with you (for a short while) in case you are stopped by plod.

Since the introduction of CIE, insurance status is no longer checked when taxing a vehicle.

It's very simple. Do it online from the car dealership before you leave the premises. Also do the registration stuff online at the same time. Ensures it is done, never leave it to the dealer to do.

Do it all online, been doing it this way ever since they started it , never had a problem .
Keep the email confirmation for a while until it all appears on the systems , the same with log book changes .

They haven't done this for five years. It's now checked throughout the time the car's taxed, instead. A few days is not an issue.

Good advice.

I had had my car on SORN for about three months.
Insured it by phone on 29th November, got confirmation by email.
MOT was 30th November, passed.
Taxed it that evening online. No issues with DVLA database, got confirmation by email.
Decided to drive it 20 miles at lunchtime on 1st December.

On that journey I was pulled over by unmarked plod on the A46 Lincoln bypass.
"No tax, insurance or MOT", according to the Police National Ipad.

Very politely asked me for documents - none with me.
Managed to find the email confirmations on my phone.
Allowed on my way.

Are you buying from a dealer? Most of the major ones (including Evans Halshaw etc.) offer 7 days insurance so you can get sorted when you are well clear of their premises.

Its funny how you are allowed to tax straight away but not allowed to SORN straight away.

The last car I bought I didn't want to tax until the end of the month as on principal I was going to use the old banger it replaced right up until the day its MOT ran out, which happened to be the 29th, then change the insurance over and tax the new one from the start of the next month.

I actually bought early in the month and collected the car new straight away as it was a private sale and I didn't want it to go to anyone else. It was a local purchase and the seller kindly drove it back to my house so it arrived legally and was then parked off road. That eve, I tried to SORN it but couldn't as apparently the DVLA had not been informed of the change of keeper. (Yet, they let you tax it). Not wanting a fine, I tried to SORN it daily and eventually was able to do so right at the end of the month. On the 1st of the next month I tried to tax it. "This car has been SORNed or Taxed within the last 7 days so computer says no". & this went on for over a week until I could tax it....

I have other cars I can use, so it wasn't really a problem. It was annoying not being able to use the new one though, and I do wonder whether had I done so, after the 1st, when it was insured but I was unable to tax it, what the outcome would have been had I been driving with no tax "Well your honour, I did my best but their computer wouldn't let me tax it because it was a bit late in letting me SORN it..." I didn't risk it.

Sorry for thread hi-jack.

You can do everything quickly online provided you do it in the correct order. Had you done the change of ownership online the day you bought the car?

As you weren’t insuring the new car, then declaring it SORN wasn’t that urgent a matter anyway.

Also, plod are not checking for tax alone any more so unless you get stopped for something else you are extremely unlikely to get caught for your brief tax avoidance :-)

My Mrs commuted for 6 months without and MOT by mistake, not stopped once. I did the same assuming my MOT and Tax were in the same month. Found out at MOT time it had expired 6 months ago :-)

Hahaha :-) - never intended to be untaxed mind you. I have 3 cars so it can get confusing.

There again I drove in Italy for 2 years with no tax or MOT, just 365 day eu valid insurance from the UK - a policy that doesn't exist any more. I looked into it carefully and UK tax and MOT has no validity in the EU, my insurance was valid - and the Italians refused to give me residency without a job (had plenty of funds) - even though EU rules said they should have (yes, they ignore what they want to ignore!) - so I could not register the car and do their version of an MOT. Left it in Italy when I returned as I didn't want to enter Dover with an untaxed and un-MOT'd car and have all that hassle :-)

Got stopped just once, for no seatbelt on (in a convertible so was obvious). I pretended not to speak Italian., "can I see your papers" , he asked, "I dont' have them", "why not?", "I'm English", "so where are your documents for the car", "In England, of course.." He waved me on and told me to wear my seatbelt :-)

It does. You just have to look carefully. Motorhome insurers are good for it.

Not just valid, but necessary - "temporarily imported" cars need to be fully home-country legal. In the UK, it's six months for non-residents.

In Italy for more than three months without residency? I'm not sure the illegal car would have been your biggest issue...

Not sure this ties into the thread's original subject, but I'd consider it related enough.

Bought a car, not using it yet, so want it on SORN. Existing SORN doesn't transfer, so I'll have to re do it, which I should be able to do using the new keeper supplement.

It won't let me do that the day I'd bought it, as they say there not had the notification that there's been a change of keeper (V5C was sent off by post). Well, ok then, not illogical.

New V5C arrives with me a few days later, at which point they must obviously have done the change of keeper business on their database.

Use the new V5C to apply for SORN online, won't let me. This time claims it's already on SORN.

Weird.

I think if you'd completed the entire new keeper AND VED/SORN online, this would not have happened..........
