Bargain Bike...or not?
Discussion
Afternoon Guys,
I was about to post a topic up about how little choice there seems to be about in the used section of £2k or below.
Admittedly, i've been away from bikes now for some years, so i'm somewhat out of the loop despite having owned a fair few bikes in my limited biking time.
Then i just found this: https://www.gumtree.com/p/aprilia-motorbikes/april...
Now alarm bells are ringing.. i have fired the seller an email, however does this ad seem a bit 'too good to be true'? (Price/miles/condition).
I'd usually just pop over and view it, but the bike is 2 hours away from me, so don't really want to waste my time.
But, back to my original query, there isn't a lot about nowadays for £2k or below, or is there & i'm looking in the wrong places?

That is a pretty good price, even for a shark like me.
What I hate in ads though is the "first to see will buy" phrase.
If I lived close enough I would go and see it just to prove him wrong...
In the meantime, what kind of bike are you looking for?
Loads of older stuff in the sub-£2k band!

I know. Is he going to force me to buy it? What I hate in ads though is the "first to see will buy" phrase.

What am i looking for?
That's a bit of a tough question, as i don't really know what i want myself!
I had an X Reg RSV before & rue the day i sold it as it was immaculate & low miles, although, having said that, in the time i owned it i stuck 150 miles on it & rode it twice, i just liked the sound it made.
Previous bikes before that included: Thundercat, GSXR K8 (new), B-King (new), then a Bandit, then the RSV, then a break for a year or 2 before i bought a Blackbird, which i sold after 18 months & having ridden only a few hundred miles on it.
The only bikes i'd put any real thought too was something 'twin' like the RSV as i think they sound incredibly with some fruity cans on them, or something street fightery.
It won't get used all that much, so it's very much just as a toy.
I didn't really want a sports bike, however i just love the old school RSV's.

I really like these.
My brother, for some bizarre reason, bought a 2001 Mille RSV-R, with a load of carbon on it. Rode it about 10 times, changed the rearsets and a few other bits and then chucked it in the garage. It's been there for about 4 years now
It is heavy!! It is also quite stretched out and wrist loading is quite high. But once it gets going, with the forged wheels it is great. When you get it over it just stays there through shear mass. But it rights itself fairly quickly when you want it. It is a world away from the modern 600's that feel almost too fast and twitchy in comparison.
The torque is great, but it does how it's age in outright power. The Ohlins and Brembos do a good job (rear brake aside). It also sounds immense.
It does kill batteries through.
He keeps offering it to me, but I already have a bunch of vehicles I don't have time to use, and nowhere to keep it. Or I'd have it off him like a shot!

it's cheap
they are awesome bikes - my favourite of any riding position
unless my eyesight's wonky that's a gen 1 (metal) tank on a remodelled gen 1.5 (should have plastic tank)
lots of non standard stickers and that can will not help the engine run - apparently you need a long can for these
gen 2s famous for mileage resetting on clocks when battery goes flat - I believe less of a problem on gen 1s
worth a look - I *really* wish I'd never sold mine

They aren't heavy, they weigh about the same as any of the latest 1000's at around 185kg dry for the RSV-R that you mentioned. They do feel quite chunky but that's just due to the era that they are from. theguvernor15 said:
They are a strange position to ride in.. But they don’t feel heavy at all!
Very much so.I bought one a few years back because it was an unbelievably good price, rode it a couple of times and swapped it on less than a week later.
I know everything is subjective, but it was the most uncomfortable bike I have ever owned!

It was odd to say the least, however i'm buying it more for the sounds. the retro look & the sound, did i say the sound? I bought one a few years back because it was an unbelievably good price, rode it a couple of times and swapped it on less than a week later.

I doubt it'd get used all that much so comfort isn't of a huge concern.
I know it's not below £2k but this seems like a lot of bike for the money:
