New motorway limit : 30mph

Roadworks are beginning! They have got the speed cameras up and are now active. The M621 into Leeds is now 30mph!
30!
It is normally 50mph, due to a fair amount of on/off sections and it's busy at rush hour around the main junctions, but it's still largely 3 lanes plus hard shoulder.
So... What could the road people possibly be doing that warrants a 30 limit, where all other motorways get spanked to 50?
30mph! the same speed as passing by most schools, the same speed as driving through housing estates where people exist all the time, not just a few hours at night. And arguably there are more dangers there - and no one is protected with barriers and certainly no speed enforcement for the entire stretch.
What could they be doing? I'll let you know in a few days when they finally get the diggers and barriers out. In the meantime, whilst we all trundle along an open 3-lane-plus-hard-shoulder speed controlled motorway at 30mph...any guesses?

Plusi it's 2 lane each direction contraflow. For about the next 12 months As somebody who may be working on that section of the M621, I think it's quite welcome. As the OP said in his original post there are several junctions on that stretch and "curves" quite a bit.

Is there like a guideline that you guys use to cut all the damn speed limits by 20 mph.
if the actual crash barriers are being replaced with concrete barriers with workers there - they will have little if no protection from cars/lorries only a few feet away so it does sound sensible to have the speed right down whilst they are working there.
On some locations you see the concrete barriers and I recall reading that they have a much higher "resistance" factor then the metal ones.

Well yeah if it's central barrier i.e bang on middle of the road then 50 mph might be too much but if as usual no workers around then 30 mph is too little. On some locations you see the concrete barriers and I recall reading that they have a much higher "resistance" factor then the metal ones.

Travel on this section of road a couple of time a week when its not busy - any idea how "tolerant" the cameras are(?) as its really easy to drift over the 30mph limit, especially having spent the last 40 mins doing 70mph which messes with the perception of speed. Would say my speed today varied between 30-35mph but was no end of people easily passing so would guess they were doing 40+.
Will either set the limiter or cruise to 30mph next time and just hope that there isn't an endless stream of trucks catching up lol
