Probably calling in to see your mum on the way.

I'm surprised nobody else has noticed this?
Well after the end of the first world war that would be extraordinary...

Some folk this evening are starting to question whether the volume, velocity, density, and colour of the smoke from the fire are consistent with a gas explosion. And the Daily Wail this evening has started moderating comments on the story -- somewhat unusual for a local, domestic gas problem. All speculation, of course, but it is possible there may be more to come on this story.

Crewed by Japanese mercenaries who didn't know about the armistice..., perhaps.

You know how a lot of people abstract electricity? Does it happen with gas too?
it have been told it does. i have a good friend that lives in london that reckons some engineers have rounds where they turn the meters round to run them backwards for a certain amount of time then turn them back round again prior to the next reading. he mentioned a specific community where relations were employed in various roles in the gas company so it was easier to do as the meter readers knew the engineers etc. this was a few years ago and i have no idea how accurate what he said actually is.
He could have just been giving you an estimated account

4 have died now according to radio Leicester.

Do you remember that kebab shop explosion along there maybe 6/7 years ago, down nearer Braunstone Gate? 2 major explosions on one road, shocking.

Total nonsense, you haven't been able to run meters backwards since 1970.

If you put a meter on backwards in this day and age it triggers the anti tamper device and stops letting gas through the meter....

I remember reports of a Jihadi bomb-making factory in Leicester, just behind the library.

When asked about it, locals were amazed- they never even suspected that Leicester had a library.

Afraid you are wrong, backstops are a relatively new thing, 10 or 15 years at most. True enough todays meters are basicallly tamper proof, but there are many still out there which could be turned. Having said that, a meter cannot be turned in standard recessed or external meter boxes as the dial impinges on the back of the box. I beleive the bracket/jig was designed exactly thus for that reason. The meters fitted to the boxes recessed into the ground are handed so they cannot be turned. However there is more than one way to skin a rabbit.
In certain circumstances if the meter is not modern and its fitted freestanding without a bracket it can give free gas in literally seconds, but I'll not go into that. In fact my mothers installation is one such case.

Are you really that bad off that if you have to steal gas? Are you a gas engineer? Do you know the implications or turning a meter? One doesn't really care about someone getting free gas if they're really that poor, more the safety implications of a incorrectly installed meter.

Do you know about tamper dots?

If someone comes to read/exchange the meter they can tell it has been in backwards.
