LOL.

I live an hour west of Salisbury. Exeter is OK but no better, I would call it roughly a draw but it's a very long way from London and the south east which is important to many people. Salisbury to London is just about commutable which makes the reasonable cost of living there even more surprising. Bournemouth is like a suburb of London that has been plonked down on the coast, awful traffic and mostly an awful place except for those who are rich enough to live in those circles/lifestyle, like many parts of London it has that odd parallel lives thing going on in abundance. Bath is just too expensive and has probably the worst traffic problems in the UK. Cheltenham pretentious but less attractive as a destination than Bath. If one was rich you would either live in one of the coastal posh parts of Poole (Lilliput, Canford Cliffs, Sandbanks etc.), royal crescent or similar in Bath. Nearly all of us however are not rich or we just don't want to live in big towns or cities.
People do this?!

In all seriousness though if one looks across what we could call the near corner of the south west, where is better to live than Salisbury?
What's the near corner? Exeter too far? Cheltenham? Bournemouth? Bath?

I don't mind Salisbury, but it's a bit weak as a tourist attraction and a bit isolated an unless you're a fan of visiting Swindon or Southampton.
Think I’d choose Cheltenham out of that lot. Not a bad place and in the Cotswolds. And accessible to motorway network/

Bath is like Windsor - full of tourists.

Salisbury is a bit cut off if you are venturing elsewhere in the UK - surely? especially if going north .

Bath and Windsor are both a disaster. Bath is mental when that Christmas market is on too.

I moved to Bath from Manhattan 4 years ago and still don’t see what the fuss about the Christmas market is - it’s only 2 weeks and is a bit of fun. Having said that though I don’t need to drive in - which I imagine would be a nightmare.

1.5 hrs to Waterloo. People have longer commutes within London!

I remember many years ago hearing that people commuted from Exeter (Great Western rather than Southern, of course)

A303 then A34, or more A30 then A34. Its pretty well bang in the middle of the south if you have wheels (OK technically that may be Swindon but we are talking about nice places in this thread), admittedly not the best if you want to fly. To be honest though pretty much everywhere in the south is a ball ache of a journey to get up north, it's one of the worst things about the infrastructure in our country, M1, M5, M6 all nightmares.

Yeah but unless you live at the train station each end its going to be more than that! Not many (if any) in London have that long of a train to get into their respective 'hub'.

I have done this train journey many times, personally I wouldn't want to do a 1.5hr train commute but surprisingly there is always a big group of people getting on and off at Salisbury. The train tends to split or join in the station with only 3 carriageways doing the journey between Salisbury and Exeter, between Salisbury and London it can be several times that.

The BBC has commissioned a two-part drama inspired by the 2018 Novichok poisonings in Salisbury.

Theresa has had stern words with Vlad and has told him not to do anything naughty again.

“Russia must end its "irresponsible and destabilising activity", Theresa May has told President Vladimir Putin in one-to-one talks, Downing Street said.

Describing the Salisbury poisoning as a "truly despicable act", she said the two suspects - believed to be Russian military intelligence officers - must be "brought to justice".

Mrs May said the UK was open to a "different relationship" but that "this behaviour could never be repeated"”

I applaud her for bringing it up with him.

But she is pissing in the wind to a large extent.

Putin really doesn’t give a fk what anyone thinks.

my point is that unless you've got good quality video of them actually doing it then Russia will always deny it and keep doing as they please

Russia would deny it then and say it was faked.

Imagine the conversation where May says - "Fair enough Vlad, we accept your version completely, sadly I can't promise that dozens of our 'civilians' won't decide to visit churches all over Russia in the near future" - wink and walks away biggrin

Russians respect strength, always have and always will and the second you appear weak they'll ride roughshod all over you so you HAVE to act "strongly" around them!

I think that appears to be true. Or they respect the will to act. Not sure they respect bluff/bluster. Or perhaps PUtin does. He rides bear, fks horses, judokas with wolverines, he's all for the show, more-so than the 'go' maybe. Maybe he likes the big stage chess brinksmenship. He's an unusual character, with his chat to the people telethon and the like.

Your point was that they were civilians, and they weren't, and we have proof that they weren't.
And Putin more or less admitted they did it a few months after the 'we were just visiting the cathedral' interview by Bill and Ben.
