Completely understandable. They've hemorrhaged all the votes from those who were just "Leave" and were left with ex-BNP types. So they might as well make their position more overt. bhstewie said:

I can't work it out.It doesn't feel a sensible move if you're trying to lend your party an air of additional respectability.

If you are a UKIP loyalist, you have a tough choice. It doesn't feel a sensible move if you're trying to lend your party an air of additional respectability.
Let's assume Brexit gets implemented in some form or another which is accepted by the majority as being reasonably ok (yes, I know...seems a long way off at the moment). In that case the correct thing might be to mothball the party and call it 'mission accomplished'.
But if you decided you wanted to keep it going, you would need a new raison d'être. So you might look at the political map to see what policy gaps are available. On fiscal matters, most of the possible alternatives are already being offered by other parties.
But there is still a gap for a main stream party to advocate more hostile policies against immigrants and in particular by becoming overtly anti-Islam.
And we know a large proportion of UKIP members might support this, based on how close Anne Marie Waters came to winning the UKIP leadership election back in 2017. This was despite saint Farage actively campaigning against her leadership bid IIRC.
So in a way, maybe it is logical to merge the Tommy Robinson brand with the remnants of the UKIP brand. Fortunately if they go for this approach, I personally don't think it will cut through and gain anything more than fringe levels of support.

Farage wouldn’t be happy with TR joining UKIP.

Farage said:
Ukip faces 'utter marginalisation' if it embraces far right politics
He seems to have lost all semblance of touch with the current UKIP "membership" and leadership. They haven't just "embraced far right p[olitics" , they've doped it to the eyeballs in rohypnol, dressed it in a gimp suit and are currently buggering the arse off it.Countdown said:

The thing with Farage being "proud" to have taken a third of the BNP vote is that he didn't miraculously convert these people to sane, sensible people - the fruit loops just found another place to hang out where they thought they could voice their stty views. No doubt Batten will want to trump Farage by claiming "we've taken half the EDL vote". They're still the same people.
