Reading the social media comments makes me realise humanity is evidently dividing in to two distinct subspecies. Intelligent, slimmer, taller people and short, dumpy moronic trolls. Won't be long before someone makes a fortune selling dungarees and banjo's.
Have faith. The Neanderthals didn't survive, we did. This second bifurcation(?) is going to end up with the same result. Ain't evolution a bh!
After a typical day visiting 'clients' in homes complete with boarded up windows, bull terrier crap all over the floor, and drug paraphernalia lying about, he came home and said, "it's just like the Morlocks and the Eloi out there." We had a conversation about the likely chances of interbreeding between the two ends of the social spectrum, and likely speciation over the course of time.

Quite a good article in the Guardian on how the parents have been taken advantage of by those wishing to push their own agendas

I've seen somewhere that the police are now looking at social media comments and abuse.

Not going to 'flame you' - however the problem with that is it enshrines the false view that a parent has 'rights' over a child, as though they are property.
Quite simply, parents don't have rights. They have a level of discretion afforded to them in how they deliver on their obligations.

The dad is apparently launching legal action against the three doctors who treated Alfie.
His son gets 16 months of what is likely to be the best care this country has to offer, in a state of the art children's hospital - and he (and the 'army') goes and sticks two fingers up at it.
Who is betting these are the same people bhing about the state of the NHS on Facebook/twitter and blaming the Tories. They need to take a long hard look in the mirror.

The truth, for the purpose of society, is only what we agree it to be. If a connected, mobilised proportion of society does not possess the critical thinking and rationality to differentiate fact from ludicrous fiction, then we have a real problem. How long before laws are changed to bend to the will of the perceived masses? Perhaps this has already started to happen…
We are in danger of descending into mob rule. Social Media has become a spotlight of outrage, fed by the trolls, anarchists and the gullible. If left unchallenged, it will stifle free speech and creativity, grind down the rough edges of society, and lead us towards a dangerous future of purgatory.

The father has asked for the protestors to leave. Interestingly, from reports I’ve seen elsewhere, this looks like the first thing he’s done which is “scripted”.

I know someone previously described him as an “adult”, but you have to factor in how (emotionally) intelligent he might or might not be, as well as the fact he’s no doubt physically exhausted. This paragraph from the previously linked Grauniad article says it better than I can:
“Alfie’s parents have fought like tigers both in and out of court and no parent – even those whose sympathies in this case are with the doctors facing death threats for doing what they honestly believe is the right thing – will begrudge the family their right to clutch in their grief at every straw there is.”

I have been thinking about this situation last night and this morning, it is shocking and appalling what the staff at Alder Hey are having to put up with.
What better way to show that not all the public feel like this than to support them

Can I encourage like minded PHers to donate, and show some support for a world class organisation and some brilliant professionals
I think it wouldn't be unfair to suggest to the parents to donate the crowd funding money to the hospital. I have been thinking about this situation last night and this morning, it is shocking and appalling what the staff at Alder Hey are having to put up with.

Simple solution:
Offer the parents and 'Alfies army' the child.
Say we have done all that is possible.
All yours, just sign this form to say you can't fix him, and then be on your way..
No legal recourse, nothing.
There was 120k in the gofundme this morning....
I understand this view is highly unpopular, so don't bother flaming me.

Anyone who's ever been in a similar situation as Alfie's parents and family should struggle to blame them for grasping at any desperate hope.
You are utterly powerless, save for hoping beyond the limits of hope that your loved one recovers.
It is the snake oil salesman turned vultures of despair offering empty promises and false hopes that deserve our judgement.

I do wish media outlets would be more careful with their language: over the last couple of days I have heard a few refer to the child being taken overseas for "treatment", which implies some sense of possible improvement, as opposed to continuing the status quo.

It's really quite scary isn't it? I find it genuinely troubling.
I have only just acquired a Facebook account. My son set one up for me for a birthday present and put on lots of stuff from groups he thought I would like. There is a family group, which is nice for keeping up with people I have neglected too long. And an interesting local history group, though I did have a spat with one chap over a post on a thread on a local supposedly closed gas works, and why you could still hear gas rushing through the exposed pipes. He said it was for gassing Jews. When I suggested that he didn't make himself look too clever by that, he responded by trying to label me as a known paedophile. The biggest problem I have with it though is the comments pages, especially on BBC articles, many coming from overseas, I might add. I used to have a fairly optimistic view of how the world will progress. Now I am not so sure. It makes what goes on in this place look like the debating society of the Oxford University branch of Mensa.
My kids just say I have lived a sheltered life.
