anyone have any good search engines or hire companies for decent deals on one way car hire? I had a quick search before booking the flights, was getting quotes of about £4-500 which seemed reasonable (10 days hire, pick up in venice drop off in nice). but now I'm trying to book one they are looking more like £850-£1000+!!

I'm not needing anything particular, all I need is something small/ basic for 2 people. but really struggling to find something reasonable price wise.

I have booked Enterprise in Spain (for June) £330 one way 9 days south to north Spain. Not sure about Italy though.

May be different for a different country drop off though?

Who was giving you quotes of £4-500 before?

I'd expect you'd be looking at Hertz or Europcar for a booking like that, but I'd also expect the one way fee alone to be over £500!

Inter-country one ways are difficult. Essentially you're looking for a company that is corporately owned in both countries, or uses the same franchisee in both countries. Otherwise the one way fee will likely be close enough to the actual repatriation cost unless it's a well travelled route.

You might find it easier to drop near the French border (Ventimiglia perhaps?) and take the train to Nice.

I had a breakdown in Milan last year, needed to get to Monaco then to Strasbourg.

The agency souring a car for me could not get me a car with their provider (Europcar) that I could take cross border Italy to France. I had to get a taxi from Milan to Monaco (140kph in a Dacia with an Italian taxi driver..) then a friend gave me a lift to Nice airport to collect a car.

Dropped the car off Strasbourg a couple of days later. I didn't pay but did see a copy of the invoice, 1,400 Euros.

I cant remember exactly what search engine/ comparison site it was- i think potentially 'argus hire'?!?! but its now the cheapest at £830.

Looks like £800 is gonna be what it costs me. the price shows '£250- one way fee' which is roughly what i was expecting. just wasnt expecting the hire of a fiat 500 to cost £550 for 11 days.

I cant be bothered looking into trains and dropping the car off in italy, training it to france or whatever. it is what it is, i'll just not tell the mrs!

That one way fee sounds low. Make sure to call and confirm with the actual rental desk once you've made the booking.

The one way fee is usually pay on arrival, so once you're there you have no other option.

solved my problem- gonna pick up/ drop off at venice airport (£130 for 7 days hire) then fly venice- nice ( 2 people + 2 bags £75) as we dont really need the car for 3 nights in nice. I'm sure the £600 i'm gonna save will cover a couple of beers in nice.
