[he made a couple of "jokes" seemingly out of nowhere about "ragheads", so basically referring to Arabs.
Why did you assume that his joke was aimed at Arabs? Perhaps he meant Moroccans, Libyans, Egyptians, Iraqis, Jordanians, Iranians, Palestinians, Afghans, etc, etc. or are these all just 'Arabs' to you?Ayahuasca said:

This context made it clear that the joke was aimed at people from Arabia?
Not quite, but regardless, you are digging at the wrong point by trying to find something wrong by taking an over-literal use of a single word. I was trying to make a point by giving a personal example that it is sometimes easy to overlook bigoted behaviour on the basis of being polite when it should be called out.
If that has never applied to you, and you have always called it out regardless, that's great for you.

You were virtue-signalling, and - a bit like the rule that posts criticising spelling or grammar must contain spilling or grammatical mistakes - you signalled that you were less than completely virtuous yourself. But let's not lose too much sleep over it, hey? There are better things to talk about.
That's a strange logic, but if it makes you feel better, great Bill said:

Most of those are Arabs surely? El stovey said:

"Watch out I know who you are!"
I think you call it absolutely correctly. Bizarre how some defend it or dismiss the perception as non-existent.
Is this what zero EI looks like, or is it just denial?
I think its probably denial - linked to an inability to admit a mistake may have been made or a line crossed.
Its a common theme.
PS - LOL at the punctuation barbs. Brutal!

Most of those are Arabs surely? But calling any cloth headdress-wearing person of Middle Eastern appearance an 'Arab' is not really on, especially if you want to wrap your own head in Libtard principles.

You completely missed the point I think. I wasn't calling "a cloth headdress-wearing person of Middle Eastern appearance an Arab". I was saying that was the racist slur the person I was in the pub with was making. Sorry to have to spell it out - hopefully most people got the point.

Can an Arab be gammon?

I completely got the point thanks. He called them Ragheads. You called them Arabs. You are both wrong. Him for being insulting, you for believing that every cloth headdress-wearing person must be an Arab.
Can an Arab be gammon?
Doh - you didn't get the point. I wasn't calling anyone Arabs. It was a "joke" which involved him using both terms. I think you are just trying to be obtuse - haven't you got something better to do?Can an Arab be gammon?
By the way, you do realise that admitting you were trying to be a smart-arse, doesn't actually make you smart?

People tend to avoid conflict, and the social norm is not to openly disagree, or perhaps say "you can't say that" in a jokey way - you don't tend to start taking people you've known for decades to task on such matters, do you?
I was initially going to type a rather pious reply saying how important it was that we all confront this type of bigoted behaviour. Then I remembered a time a couple of years ago when I had met up with a chap I'd known for many years but hadn't seen for a long time. After a couple of pints he made a couple of "jokes" seemingly out of nowhere about "ragheads", so basically referring to Arabs. As you say, I didn't go along with the joke, but neither did I call him out on it. Not impressive by me. So I agree it is difficult in some situations to say what needs to be said.
That's real life social interaction between humans and quite understandable.
Posters pretending they always call it out? Don't believe that for a second!
