I've just done the same and now my brain has melted with the sheer stupidity of his ranting.

I can only imagine how confused and angry he is as his stumpy orange little fingers stab at the screen of his phone as he types them out.

Memes That Kill: The Future Of Information Warfare: https://www.cbinsights.com/research/future-of-info...

Back in 2011 DARPA funded Dr. Robert Finkelstein to look in to the weaponisation of social media, this article is an updated rewrite of his original report. There's nothing particularly new in it but in light of the Russian hacking scandal it's good that the techniques used are being codified and put out there for public consumption.

One thing that does strike me is that it's now 7 years since Dr Finkelstein's original report and yet five eyes defences against this kind of cyber attack seem to be fairly minimal. The spooks themselves will have a good idea of what's going on but there has been no attempt I am aware of to harden our democratic institutions or the individual voter against attack.

Having seen the way Trump won through a relatively small number of votes in swing states makes me worry about similar things happening in the UK's small number of swing constituencies that often decide the outcome of an election. Similarly with false information there has been no attempt to help people help themselves, even a simple add campaign asking "Are you a useful idiot?" featuring techniques for researching and applying critical thinking to your own biases could help a lot. "Think before you link" could be another slogan.

The fact that not even the most basic and easy to implement safeguards are being put in place does make me question the competence of our politicians.

One of the problems is that most politicians are IT ignorant. Many are "elderly" and even the younger ones are not too clued up.

They did not see the way IT was being used as a weapon and now they are struggling to work out how to counter such attacks.

Some of the replies are funny. Although they do seem to get recycled (both pro T and anti T) with monotonous regularity. But then again Trump's tweets re-cycle the same guff stuff again and again too.

I'm not even convinced they are "struggling to work out how to counter such attacks", I think they're just bumbling along in ignorance, doing what they've always done as if the world hasn't changed around them.

Ok, there’s a bunch of news headlines with the Guardian at the top. I have read said article and it is hysterical drivel - it’s amazing people are taken in by such sophistry. Please tell me no PHer thinks this is worth forming your opinions from?!

The author’s “argument” seems to be that because Trump disapproves of mass migration into Europe and sees it as a threat to European culture that he is thus some terrible racist. Is that REALLY where the bar is for racism now?

As for linking me wikipedia...have a laugh on me.

Do you understand the difference between actual evidence vs some opinion piece or an editable wikipedia article?
You could try reading the reports linked to by the Wikipedia page. Or this PBS summary of Trump - https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/every-moment... .
Nah much easier to dismiss a large body of evidence that proves Trump is racist. I suspect for certain people reading what is classed as racism is uncomfortable so it’s better to just say “lah lah lah can’t hear you”

That's one of the things that most detractors of wiki ignore about it, a lot of it is sourced. It's a great resource.

Rosanne Barr is now claiming her show was cancelled because she's a trump supporter, not for the racist comments she made

An interesting post that informs me.
However, in today's climate I don't think it would make a lot of difference how many times you told people to be aware of fake news and hacking scandals.
I think many people are so sceptical of the political establishment that they are just voting with their gut feelings
Either by saying, to hell with the lot of you or reverting to their tribal instincts.
I am listening to Project Fear every day and thinking, do I believe this stuff ....and then because it doesn't suit my agenda .....think nah.....it's a lot of rollox.
However I'm not that stupid that I don't realise that if we leave without a "deal" there's gonna be some pain.
" Nowt to gain without a bit of pain " ...as the actress said to the bishop.

How's the US doing at the moment?

Genuine question, I don't follow this thread or have a dog in the fight. If it's doing badly, how would Clinton have fared in the same climate?
The trend lines are pretty much in line with the previous administration. Business seems to be doing well but at the expense of rolling back shed loads of regulation for environment and workers protection. Good news for car lovers this includes emissions, maybe not so good for the planet but this administration doesn't believe in that crap.

The roll back of regulations to be more like the fifties gets largely unnoticed thanks to all the crazy stuff!
Yeh, that breathable air and drinkable water is totally overrated. Bring on Love Canal the sequel! wobble
