Can Trump pardon Manafort?
I know he can as POTUS but could he afford to do it politically?
Just how would the American public react? - I'm not talking about his hardcore base as I believe nothing he could ever do would turn them against him.
My understanding is technically yes, however in doing so it removes the ability of the pardon recipient to plead the 5th, which could be devastating.

But the way things are going these days, there are no norms or rules any more.

Edit: Just read that

Cohens Lawyer speaking of Cohen said:
"He has flatly authorised me to say under no circumstances would he accept a pardon from Mr Trump, who uses the pardon power in a way that no president in American history has ever used," he said.
Wew, shots fired.
I think it is even more complex than that. I agree technical it seems possible. Politically it would costly, but to the Republican party in the upcoming election, rather than him personally. His own survival instinct could well make him do it. Thought that last quote seems to make it less likely and firmly throws the ball into the court of the Republican party to support a rapid impeachment asap and well before the November election.

How can the GOP not notice that having Trump in office in November is going to be a disaster for them?

Yes we have indeed come a long way.
I suspect you think it's ok as it "winds up lefties"
It doesn't take much if this thread is anything to go by tbh.
'righties' are equally volatile if the rest of N,P&E is anything to go by smile

Co-operation with the prosecution will reduce the sentence by a lot. He may not see the any meaningful punishment. For the USSC its more important to fry the bigger fish.

Plus Trump is not known for his loyalty to others and Cohen has no doubt seen others who were thrown under the bus simply because they stopped being useful.
AIUI elocution an important factor in guilty pleas under the American justice system, basically the suspect must fully set out the details of their own guilt, otherwise they can face future charges on what they missed out. I can't imagine the prosecutors missing that opportunity to extract as much as possible under oath with that threat.

Trump in power = Disaster for the GOP in November.
Trump not in power Disaster for the GOP in November and no-one else to blame for it.

Maybe I'm overthinking it though, never ascribe to astute strategy what can easily be explained by stupidity.

He's just got his phone back: "If anyone is looking for a good lawyer, I would strongly suggest that you don’t retain the services of Michael Cohen!"

Won't be a disaster... Dems may make marginal gains, Trump will then paint this as a MASSIVE BIGLY VICTORY against the FAKE NOOZ who said the weak dems were going to win and were wrong again and he was right as ALWAYS and he's never going to STOP winning you LOSERS"

To put it another way, if you're a low income individual with little or no prospects, or you have a fetish for guns, or you hate gays/lesbians/liberals/immigrants who else are you going to vote for?

Allocution or elocution, I'm a bit confused now. Just looked them both up and they both seem to have similar semantics, so not sure which is actually correct for this context.

--- edit ---

Scrub that, I'm just being an idiot with googling.

Allocution.

I'm sure my relatives and friends who work in the NHS every day would have some insight as to how well it works. So, no, I don't know, nor agree, that is "risible hyperbole".

I said I can see both sides. I also expressed a thought as to what could be done with a preference to address root cause rather than symptom.

If you can't see the potential practical and strategic benefits of a physical barrier between you and something else I'm not sure where to start. Walls have been quite popular down the years.

You're going to have to direct me towards the argument you're trying to create.

People who work in the NHS have been foretelling its doom since it was set up.
