I agree. This country is great despite the politicians and their policies, not because of them.

Light touch government, strong laws and strong regulations - that's the recipe for success.

Just venting frustration at the 'quality' of those in charge of the UK. But I guess we get what we deserve, God help us.
In bold Something we both very much agree on despite differences - Useless government being allowed to screw up by a useless opposition.

However I disagree that the UK deserves that and being an atheist I don’t think God is going to help us.
No religious thoughts meant, just a saying that fitted well given the context.

Bloody hell, these really are desperate/strange times. I agree wholeheartedly with the both of you. I'd go a little further though - he should have been sacked.

There are many MP's on both sides of the isle that have wrongfully taken some much larger amounts from the public purse and not been dealt with.

greedy? Did you even read the article rofl

Course not. Being informed isn't your strong point, is it?

bbc said:
In 2016, he tried to split a genuine cost of £700 for photographs for his office between two budgets by faking two separate invoices.

The court heard only one of them, for £450, was reimbursed, from a start-up budget that only had about £480 remaining in it and was not due to roll over and otherwise may have been lost.

Davies would have been allowed to claim the whole amount from a separate budget for office costs.
bbc said:
The prosecution did not allege he was seeking falsely to profit from the invoices
bbc said:
The court heard he could have claimed the full amount from the budget with the larger amount available or had the photographer create new legitimate invoices to split the cost that way.
bbc said:
Davies has since repaid the £450, with the £250 claim never submitted.
bbc said:
District Judge Zani said he noted that Davies was a man of good character who has shown "considerable remorse" and how there was no financial gain for actions.

I didn't defend what he did and nor would I. Happy to discuss what he actually did, not what you assumed he did.

He may well be subject to a recall petition.

He really should be dealt with, as should any corrupt MP.

He forged invoices.

That’s game over in my book.

Christ, another one been at it by the looks of things

MP Johnny Mercer's salary funded by failed bond scheme marketing agent

I'm sure all sides have their share of bad eggs but surely more should be done to drive these shysters out of politics.

I agree, and it seems it actually would have been easier to have claimed the expenses legitimately. What a colossal tit.

Talking of colossal tits, here is yet another tory with his nose in the trough.....

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-478842...

Now I'm sure the usual tory fanboys will be along in a moment to defend this chap but in my mind, he needs to go. With charlatans like this is it any wonder the tories are a party in decline?

Seems he's quite intensely stupid, but not plainly crooked.

Intense stupidity might still be reason to be rid of him.

Nope - it's just the tory ones that need to go biggrin

The way that the expenses scandal in Parliament was dealt with caused a breakdown in the trust between public and MP's and IMO it's never recovered from that breakdown

the fact keith vaz is not in jail should be enough to tell most people something has gone badly wrong with politics.

I hear nothing but good things about Johnny Mercer and part of me thinks is this the equivalent of waking up one day and finding that your employer has links to what seems to be some very shady stuff.

The LC&F situation is a giant mess that has literally stuffed peoples lives and the situation with Surge is "interesting".

I'd like to know more before forming a judgement.

You're not doing it right. All you need to do is spot which party the subject belongs to. If it's your bunch then he/she is misunderstood, if it's the other lot then he/she is evil beyond redemption. Don't let facts get in the way.

Agree.

But the whole situation does support the argument that we should recognise that being an MP should be a full-time job and we should pay MPs a good salary on that basis (maybe financed by having fewer of them) and we can then ban them from having other work or taking money from any outside source, be it companies, trade unions, or rich individuals.

By definition light touch is the opposite of strong regulation. Light touch is what brought us junk mortgage bonds and the GFC.
