You sure?

“Thailand-based Mr Unsworth's knowledge of the cave complex is said to have played a key role in the rescue effort. He travelled into the caves in the first days after the boys went missing and helped bring in top international cave rescue experts for the mission.
Mr Unsworth had earlier said the mini-sub built by Mr Musk's team, and flown to Thailand before being rejected as inappropriate for the rescue mission by Thai officials, would have had "absolutely no chance of working".”
Yeah - he didn't do a single bit of diving. Not a single bit.

He may have briefed the english lads (I don't know them) on what the cave is like. But I'm slightly perplexed why he didn't assist with the search if he knew it so well...

Now I think Musk is a grade a tool for saying what he did. But I also think that he probably did want to help. I don't think there was any need for the bloke to sound of like he did. I can't comment if the invention would have worked (I doubt it). But why mouth of about someone trying to get attention - when you are effectively trying to say you were involved in the rescue? The real guys who did it are not back running their businesses - not gobbing off and acting up to journalists.
You said:

“The bloke who is knocking Musk didn't actually participate in getting the kids out.”

That’s clearly wrong. Unless you believe only the ones who dived were ‘participating’ and no one else was involved.

As I said in the other thread, Monroe/Hopkins resulted in £30k compo + £300k fees, that was for being accused of graffitiing war memorials, to 10% of the follower base Musk has

If the guy sues he’s in for some cash

I think he did assist, by explaining what he knew of the caves. By the sounds of it he was a recreational diver and probably knew the caves very well dry, had dived them when flooded but didn't fancy his chances diving them as part of a rescue. That's fine by me!

Presumably he'd have to sue in the US, I think the libel laws there are a whole lot different to here...

Unsurprising post.

Normal people are going to be very disapointed by his idiotic tweets. They don't distract from his achievements, but they do make him look like a plonker.

The "Pedo Cave Rescuer" by the sounds of it is a regular bloke who dives the caves for recreation and thus was able to give rescuers some helpful information. As he wasn't particularly well known or an ambassador for any organisation, his comments although crass were a fairly frank expression of his personal opinion.

Elon Musk however is the face of several high profile organisations and accusing someone of being a p(a)edo in front of the world because they think you talk ste is not on (and a bit bizarre). Disappointing as he has a lot of followers of the innovative work his companies are doing.

it's not necessarily about the cash though - to someone like musk having to back-down and apologise would hurt him way more than any financial settlement a court would impose

Betcha a signed dollar he meant to write torpedo.

The torpedo guy.

In other news, why doesn't Twitter have a 'Are you sure you want to publish that?' button?

Using your logic Edison, arguably the world's greatest inventor, didn't invent anything after he invented the first industrial r&d lab (Menlo park).
No, Edison was consistently technically hands-on, not just a money-man flitting from hobby to hobby.

I guess I'm in that group, and no. It's indefensible. I've not seen anyone try.

A plonker leans against a bar that isn't there and falls over, Calling someone who he considered to have snubbed him a pedo is a whole different level. Normal people are not disappointed they are disgusted.

What are the odds that some very expensive private investigator is already in Thailand looking to dig up some dirt?

Musk could easily get out of this mess. Apologise publically for his behaviour - saying he acted foolishly after being hurt given he tried to help. Offer of money to charities both for the british cave rescue council - and also for kids who are abused etc... And then just talk about how amazing the guys who actually did the rescue are. People would soon get over it.
Or I suspect in today's 24hr media cycle just do nothing and it'll be forgotten about by Friday.

And if by some remote chance a libel case comes his way, settle it tied to a gagging order.
Is the correct answer.

I think crowd funding for legal cases is generally dubious, but I'd view this as an exception to the rule...

Does the diver now have any choice but to sue?

There will be some people who believe that if he doesn't sue he is as good as admitting that Muskrat was right.

My business partner wants to invent a login for PayPal where you have to pass a breathalyser - twitter needs that as well.
