Car broke down in the M1 so-called smart motorway
Discussion
No hard shoulder these days
The guy has pulled over as best he can, and presumably done what he's had to do while trying to sort out what to do with it.
Luckily the police took the car to the pound out of the way

Eh? The driver ABANDONED the car as "they had somewhere to be".
Aren't you allowed to abandon things?Say you have a wedding to be best man at, or maybe an appointment which isn't going to move.
Isnt that why hard shoulders are useful. You can 'abandon' the car there - get a lift to get some petrol and youre on your way
'Smart' motorway. Wonder who thought that up?
He's tucked in well, but if car was still driveable/moving I'd have gone just a few yards further and parked up more safely 'off' the road on that barren bit of land out of harm's way.
As he'd left (abandoned) his car, surely can't have had far to go?
Why would you leave your car? Perhaps emergency, someone in hospital, who knows? But why not tell the Highways that when you phone in that you've broken down? Odd.
Suppose he could have thumbed a lift. Can't remember the last time I saw anyone 'thumbing' it. Must have died out.
Perhaps he nicked the car?
A thief who has a conscience and phones in.
I was on so-called smart a few months back when the red x came up on the gantry - the panic by some drivers who leave it to the last moment to change to next lane was scary. Funny thing was I don't recall seeing anyone stopped nor broken down in the lane.

Whats the tiny yellow car in front of shot? The guy has pulled over as best he can, and presumably done what he's had to do while trying to sort out what to do with it.

I don't get the hate for smart motorways.
What's the point in having 1 lane permanently out of action just in case there is a breakdown. Its better to have it out of action only when needed.
There are plenty of multi lane A roads that cope perfectly well without.a hard shoulder.
Agreed. Especially when you look at the different types of smart motorways. What's the point in having 1 lane permanently out of action just in case there is a breakdown. Its better to have it out of action only when needed.

Even so, new ones often have a side strip for parking up in.
Motorways have higher speeds and if its safer there's a move to go to 80mph limit which will help differentiate them.
If a smart motorway was as smart as is alleged there'd be no need for the guy to pull over tight, the cones or the HATO,
The lane would automatically close as soon as it detects someone's parked up in it.
Never mind - no harm done

Human input is still required at various stages of the process. The lane would automatically close as soon as it detects someone's parked up in it.
They have been tweaking these motorways for 12 years now, with more refuge bays being promised where necessary. They're not perfect but they are a step in the right direction.

When all four lanes are solid standing traffic and there is a shunt ahead - how do the emergency services get on scene ? What's the point in having 1 lane permanently out of action just in case there is a breakdown. Its better to have it out of action only when needed.

A : Quickly, using the hard shoulder
or
B: taking forever having to force there way inbetween standing lanes of drivers all now paying no interest to anythng but facebook ?????
Thats why they suck.

...and the lane has been closed. The guy has pulled over as best he can, and presumably done what he's had to do while trying to sort out what to do with it.
So that's 3 lanes plus a closed shoulder. Just like if there was a dedicated shoulder.
Except if he hadn't broken down, it'd be four lanes, 33% more capacity.

Aren't you allowed to abandon things? If you've run out of fuel, you're an idiot. If you've got a mate in another car with you, he can go for fuel while you wait with the car.

You may well be, but currently it's not an offence you can be charged with Shaw Tarse said:
