There are no rules BUT anyone with half a brain cell who owns a boat would make sure their guests wore them.
Do tell? I've been on a lot of privately owned boats. I almost never wear a life jacket. I've been on a lot of commercially operated life boats. I almost never wear a life jacket. If you are operating a small boat at speed and at night, it might be advisable to wear a life jacket. It is unnecessary in the large majority of cases.

Come on mate, the poor girl died! The bloke sounds an absolute degenerate who can't/wont own up to his responsibilities.
Exactly, a girl died, and 'lol he's on the run.' UK 2018.I saw the mum/sister on the news today, bloke on the run seems like your typical . Hope as others do, he gets a nice long sentence.

It comes across to me as being written by a person who has a massive chip on their shoulder.
Reading up on the Matthew Cobden 18 months, this snippet flashed up... Adds some perspective to what looks like a harshe sentence at 6 years....
"A father has been jailed for killing his young son by negligently allowing him to eat heroin in the family home.
Simon Jones, 30, was sentenced to six years after he had previously admitted the manslaughter by gross negligence of 23-month-old Daniel Jones.
Daniel's mother, Emma Bradburn, 34, was also jailed for four years after she admitted allowing the child's death."
So, same sentence for being in a boat with a 24 year old adult who crashes said boat and drowns, vs a dad who lets his baby eat heroin...! And the mum gets 2 years less?

Just seen the news where they had the mother and sister of the girl on for an interview. They started going on about how there are no speed limits or mot's for boats, or mandatory wearing of life jackets. Apparently she's going to start campaigning for more safety measures. Give it a rest.
Anyway, matey didn't turn up to his trial and got given 6 years for manslaughter. He's now on the run. Lol.
Tbh I don't think he's fully responsible. After all, she was the one in control. But by not turning up to his trial, he's being made an example of.
As others have noted, being in charge of a vessel is quite well defined in law; just because she was at the helm doesn't stop him being legally responsible for the safety of both of them.Anyway, matey didn't turn up to his trial and got given 6 years for manslaughter. He's now on the run. Lol.

This isn’t me but I’ve owned two speedboats.
Used to do some really crazy stuff in them.
A 14ft boat with 50hp is pretty quick and contrary to popular belief the Thames can get quite choppy. Many’s the time I’ve had to back off and I’m ICC qualified.

As for 6 years being harsh my guess is had he turned up at court as expected of him an offered a defense it would have been a lot less. As it is his cowardice will ensure he spends a long time in prison likely getting bummed by big ron an the boys

You are right. It is only necessary if you fall in.
And yet, all over the world it is both normal and lawful to mess around in a boat without wearing a lifejacket. Obviously this is outrageous; what are you going to do about it?Being 'normal and lawful' doesn't make them, by and large, less stupid. (Not my particular area of expertise, but I have completed a Sea Survival course which qualifies me to fall off things).
Some curious viewpoints in this thread.
I'm not against people having fun, and I partake in things like off piste skiing and riding motorbikes, so am not massively risk averse, but would I drive a tiny flimsy old speedboat at 30mph on the Thames in the dark after drinking all night?
Absolutely no way. It makes me shudder just thinking about it.
Horrible things happen on rivers in the dark, and when they do, usually people die in horrible ways.
In my opinion, his actions were irresponsible, and ultimately his poor choices led to a death.
The court clearly agree.

Yup - as skipper he was responsible for safety ..I'm not against people having fun, and I partake in things like off piste skiing and riding motorbikes, so am not massively risk averse, but would I drive a tiny flimsy old speedboat at 30mph on the Thames in the dark after drinking all night?

Plus being in charge of a boat while drunk
After dark
Probably without proper lights / or ability to see what he was doing
And traveling too fast to be safe.
And no safety equipment
... all very stupid and avoidable.
