Interesting thread.
I own two boats. One, single engine, 20', the other 33' twin with 2x430bhp.
I always ask passengers whether they wish to wear a jacket when they board. I have only eve had one accept the offer. I've never worn one myself.
When I have passengers that have never been on board before, I give a short safety talk prior to heading out.
I have given passengers the wheel on occasion, on both boats, but never at night, and I wouldn't do so at night, unless they were my equal or with more experience. When I have handed over the wheel, I have always been next to them, giving instruction.
Ten of us went to an island near by last night for a festival. About 20m away. On a large rib a friend owns. Nobody wore a jacket. We hit speeds of around 30mph in open water in an average chop (for here). The captain for the night didn't drink. He would not have passed the wheel to anyone on board, even though 7 of us own and drive boats regularly.
Here in Greece, a captain has to have a ticket, the boat has to be insured, and all paperwork must be present and correct. This year, a further certificate is issued verifying that you have registered all your paperwork with the port police - it has your photo on it, and is stamped. Anyone out at sea without this certificate this year will have their boat confiscated, and face a 5K Euro fine.

Lots of really stupid things are 'normal and lawful' - paying extra for unprotected sex with hookers (please check jurisdiction), riding motorcycles in shorts and flip flops, refilling your petrol mower whilst smoking, cycling without a helmet.
Being 'normal and lawful' doesn't make them, by and large, less stupid. (Not my particular area of expertise, but I have completed a Sea Survival course which qualifies me to fall off things).
OK then, I'll join the ranks of stupid people on boats and enjoy life-jacketless boating use while know it alls tell me, along with 99% of people on boats all over the world, how stupid we are. FYI I've been on a boat which sank. Not took on water and we thought 'oh dear', sank as in weight exceeded buoyancy. I still don't wear life jackets.

Agreed. What does his colour have to do with it, and is he posh? He has a tatty old fletcher boat which is about as cheap a boat as you can buy.
Durrrrr. Clearly there was a racist motive to this crime, you know with her being er, like er white. er…...well she had a spray tan sometimes so clearly this posh whitey was a massive racialist. ape x said:

I saw the bit on ITV London News - river plod tested the boat & said it was badly maintained & pulled to one side. Sounds a bit odd to me - I don't recll seeing 2 outboards or 2 propellers, & it
Prop torque, its perfectly normal on any single propped boat, that's what adjustable trim tabs are for. There are some interesting laws in relation to boating in the UK, which many are not aware of. Eg drunk in charge or its equivalent, should the worst happen the sentences are somewhat different to driving! Investigations of accidents are very thorough indeed.
I was out yesterday in a gale force 6 several miles offshore in what were some pretty horrific "boating" conditions, I have a lot of respect for open water, its a very, very long way to swim ashore, so yes a buoyancy aid & a helmet I regard essential in those conditions, would never take a boat out in weather like yesterday deliberately, though have been out when its gotten equally rough. I left the boat behind & instead I was happily windsurfing in it.
Many boaters have no idea what it can be like in the water, even a half mile swim will have most people done for. Add wind & waves, you have almost nil viz & almost impossible to be spotted, cold water, currents etc.
Our boat has ample life jackets aboard. Always worn when were moving, only off when in safe anchorage. Every one on board is told & shown how to operate the VHF, the flares, where the fire extinguishers are, about the kill switch & just as importantly to re-arm it. I run a tight ship but when you know how easy & quick things can go wrong & what its like to be in open water its not a surprise. Many however are simply unaware.

It is of course your prerogative to do stupid things which may result in your own death, but just bear in mind that if your stupidity or recklessness results in the death of someone else, you may well go to prison.FYI I've been on a boat which sank. Even if you didn't do anything illegal or unlawful.
Its an interesting case, because he didnt actually break many laws. Certainly not enough (IMO) to warrant a 6 year sentence, but he didnt help himself and I dare say the judge took his attitude into account.
But please, dont bring in laws around life jackets. It was a one off freak event, in a set of unusual circumstances, and is not representative of the thousands of boats used every weekend which dont sink.

He's the only person on this thread that's made reference to this guy's ethnicity, demographic, job & choice of home, (the logical conclusion being that noone else gives a st apart from him) yet accuses everyone else of prejudice.
In 4 and a bit pages I think I've only read 1 or 2 posts that imply they think guy in question shouldn't receive a custodial sentence and the vast majority of posts have stated (in one way or another) that he's a dhead.
I am slightly though - is he actually posh? I wouldn't have said so, but the question of whether he is/isn't never once entered my mind. Also WTF has his job and choice of home got to do with, well, anything at all?
I don't often get the chance to post on PH, but I'm quite glad in a way, because on almost every occasion that I do I'm reminded that there are some, quite frankly, weird people around.

I had already posted on page two so I wasn't really "championing" anyone by responding to this particular post. And there have been posts to the contrary, so this thread isn't exactly a united front against him.
Fair enough, but for the reasons stated above it seemed the oddest post to make the comment "well said" about. I'd assumed you'd read the post in its entirety.Lord Marylebone said:
Some curious viewpoints in this thread.
I'm not against people having fun, and I partake in things like off piste skiing and riding motorbikes, so am not massively risk averse, but would I drive a tiny flimsy old speedboat at 30mph on the Thames in the dark after drinking all night?
Absolutely no way. It makes me shudder just thinking about it.
Horrible things happen on rivers in the dark, and when they do, usually people die in horrible ways.
In my opinion, his actions were irresponsible, and ultimately his poor choices led to a death.
The court clearly agree.

The kicker here for me is that TWICE he’d been stopped by the river police and warned about speeding, once with a date on board. I’ve spent a lot of time in RIBs on open water, and knew of some blokes killed in a nighttime collision where booze was involved. It’s all great fun until someone dies.
He’s shown utter contempt for her family and the legal process by going AWOL, I’m not surprised that the judge has gone heavy on the sentence.

How the hell have they not found him yet? And why isn't his absence not all over the front pages?
I would suggest he isn't particularly high on their list of people to capture.I'm not sure what he hopes to achieve by being in the run?
There is probably only a moderate chance of him getting caught, but even so he is going to have to be cautious every day. He won't be able to leave the country or go on holiday.
If he had just appeared in court like a normal person and plead his case, he probably wouldn't have got 6 years.
So he's basically sentenced himself to much longer than 6 years living as a fugitive.
Bonkers.
