What's the pay like?

Seems to be an opportunity there...

I had forgotten until this morning that they had kidnapped the Lebanese Prime Minister for two weeks.

Crazy stuff.

Allegedly the Turkish security forces spied on them and have hard evidence. Not quite as bad as the Salisbury fiasco.

Reported on BBC this AM there there is audio and images. Watch was sync'd to his phone.

Pretty grim stuff.

It's sounds a bit iffy. They're saying he started audio recording on his Apple Watch before he went in then left his phone with his wife, so was all backed up. That all sounds entirely feasible, I mean, anyone with sense would take precautions.

The bit I don't get is they're saying they tried to get him to unlock the watch but he refused, but they did it using his fingerprint, which meant they would need his phone which he didn't have on him.

So it could also be a way for the Turkish authorities can say they have audio recording without admitting the building was bugged.

Either way, if there is audio and it's in secure hands, it's a major diplomatic incident.

Trump's already said he doesn't care because the Saudis buy a lot of weapons, but others in the US are using more appropriate language.

I get the impression that this is not as simple as it sounds. In the context , journo pisses off ruling administration , administration bumps off journo.

Firstly , all we have at present is speculation, it does sound and appear very iffy, but still, as yet there is no conclusive proof that the journo is dead, or indeed where he is, live or dead.

Secondly, for anyone trying to torpedo the reforms the leadership in Saudi want to implement the timing could not be better, with the Mnuchkin "Davos in the desert" being just days away. Some of the comments coming from the Saudi leadership, appear very pissed at what has happened/being alledged.

It s going to being interesting to see what pans out, hopefully this incident will be more accurately reported than the Saudi/Canada spat was.

I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone tried to push an alternative narrative.

I was a bit sceptical, assuming they worked with Bluetooth and/or Wifi, but it seems (some models at least) support LTE and UMTS2.

Right now HMG is desperately hoping that the evidence the Turks have is thinner than the evidence of the Salisbury killers.

And no-one is contrasting Erdogan's worry for the fate of a critical journalist with his recent treatment of Turkish media.

Pretty stty state of affairs. frown

The guy the BBC interviewed was described as a close friend and journalist, forget his name. He claimed that there was recordings of him entering the building, going into a specific room with an official, then being dragged into another room beaten and tortured then dismembered. he named the rooms etc

Could all be crap but he was very particular about the details.

A country that allows the chopping off of peoples heads in public squares are capable of anything

It never ceases to amaze me how low the UK and other countries will go to earn money, doing business with these dictators is bad real bad

From what I read today they tried to unlock the watch by using a number of PIN combinations, and failing that mistakenly thought they could use his fingerprint; a quick call to Apple Support would have pointed them in the right direction smile

Whilst it is certainly possible that he recorded the conversation on his watch, which then uploaded the recording to iCloud, he would have needed a cellular watch with a good connection as I doubt he would have been in range of his phone (or they were both connected to the same open wifi network - unlikely). Apple usually present stories of users being saved by their watch features (heart attacks etc.) when they have a keynote although I not sure this will make the cut at the next event.

Or as you say it could be the Turks bugged the building and want to use this as a means to deny it, which is entirely plausible. I bet the other embassies are currently having a good look around.

I appreciate there is an element of realpolitik when dealing with countries like Saudi Arabia but I just wish for once we send a clear message and stop dealing with them/selling them weapons etc. unless and until they stop their medieval practices.

This might be tinfoilhattery but I wonder if it has anything to do with Andrew Brunson being released?

I would be very surprised if the US or the Israelis didnt have the technology to get the relevant audio / video information that’s been distributed.

If the news reports are true can you imagine all that money and planning on an operation and then at the end, almost like in a movie, someone notices a little "recording" symbol on a watch?

The details are horrific. Tortured and dismembered. Animals. First the Russians, now this. I hope the US step up and hammer them for this. Least of all, material reparations to his family and hand over the officers who flew in to carry it out
