Saudi Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi

Looking at the mechanics of this, something that I can't understand is the question of why they chose to carry out the execution / torture in such a high profile location.
Doesn't make any logical sense, imo.
Basically the king (prince) sees himself as a supreme untouchable omniscient anointed head of state who can do anything he wants ... world opinion doesn’t matter as other countries need KSA for oil.Doesn't make any logical sense, imo.

Given what your typical Saudi is like when it comes to thinking or planning or doing I'm surprised they managed to clean up the mess. I'm not surprised they made it.
I’ve spent most of the past year in the Gulf.
The Saudis certainly have a rather unique combination of wealth/ incompetence / arrogance / hypocrisy / stupidity and ineptitude.
If you ever employ one ... expect progress and delivery at the pace of intercontinental drift ...
I was trying to think of a close approximation of coming into money unearned like when the ksa was invented and this is
the closest uk version I can find except in the ksa case the funds are inexhaustible.

A ‘fist fight’ Saudi style.
“Khashoggi’s fingers were cut off while he was held down, the recording suggests. He was injected with a substance, which silenced him, then carried into another room – the third to be used in the gruesome killing – where he was lifted on to a meeting table then cut to pieces.”
After days of denial, Saudi Arabia has now said that the writer Jamal Khashoggi died in a ‘fist fight’ at its Istanbul consulate. Martin Chulov pieces together events surrounding this death and the investigation, and links to Riyadh’s controv

How come most of the world's oil ended up being underneath some of the world's most fked up countries....?
It is called Dutch disease/ resources curse. Having lots of oil/ copper whatever as a % of the economy massively increases the chances of your country being fked. Rent seeking behaviour kicks in - basically everyone concentrates and fights on how to control & divvy up the easy cash.Gandahar said:

Was this dude really just a journalist?
His father was one of the shadiest arms dealers in the World.
I suspect he was involved in all sorts of unsavoury stuff.
And why do we care?
Intelligence services no doubt are involved in this kind of thing every day. The Saudis cleaning house is really nobody else's concern but theirs.
This is just politics at work. Will be interesting to see the outcome though.
With all those inaccuracies I guess you are working for a certain Middle Eastern country? His father was one of the shadiest arms dealers in the World.

The useful thing about having so many princes is that it's easy to change the people at the top if it becomes necessary.
The current crown prince wasn't always so and could be replaced overnight.
In the case of a major fkup the family can afford to blame it all on him & drop him in a hole rather than risk the lot.
I don't expect a particularly clever or high effort solution to come from the Saudis but given the choice they'll do some shuffling and throw a lot of money about rather than risk being left to look after themselves.
It's not that simple. MBS has already removed all his opponents, either by jailing them or worse. The current crown prince wasn't always so and could be replaced overnight.

He doesn't have any, which you of course know, but since when has lack of evidence credible sources ever stopped people posting on here! The place would be very quiet if we all had to provide evidence for what we posted!!Hmmm... one of the thugs just happened to bring a fake beard with him? But couldn't actually get his fat feet into Khashoggi's shoes.

ETA: with all of this surveillance detail, the Turks are really ratcheting up the pressure on SA before Erdogan's press conference tomorrow. High stakes bluff-calling?

One thing I realised after a long time of living in the Middle East and seeing how news developed is that it's default to lie, and the weirdest thing is, they think everyone else is stupid and will fall for it. They honestly do think that the rest of the world isn't as clever as they are and will fall for it.
So when that doesn't happen, they release more information that is still a lie but a touch closer to the truth - rinse and repeat until they finally throw their hands up and tell you what really happened.
Classic example was an electricity sub station had an issue, dropped power to a large chunk of Dubai and went up in flames.
First report from the Official Sources was that there wasn't a problem. Then there was a problem but nothing to do with them. Then there was a problem, it might have something to do with them. Then there was a problem, it did have something to do with them, but it wasn't their fault and no, it wasn't on fire. Yes, OK, maybe it is on fire. There is a problem, it does have something to do with them, yes it is on fire, but it's not their fault. Yes, OK, there is a problem, it does have something to do with us, yes it is on fire and it is their fault...
The only reason the truth came out was social media documenting the whole thing.
This was over the space of four hours or so.
It was a regular thing and it's funny knowing what we saw during GW2 with Comical Ali, is that's the way they think. If it wasn't so funny, it would be hugely insulting, but it just reinforced my view that I'd never met such an arrogant lot with absolutely nothing to back it up.
