Bercow hasn't been central to stopping Brexit at all. Other than in the referendum when he got one vote like the rest of us, he's never voted on any motion in the HoC so has had less influence than other MPs in stopping Brexit. What he has done is stood up for MPs to have their say when the executive wanted to shut them down, and those MPs have been central to stopping Brexit.
You must see how contradictory that is?

If he’s manoeuvred the house to favour MPs opposed to Brexit then he’s done far more than he could have done with one vote.

A central role if ever there was one.
He hasn't manoeuvred anything, so it's not contradictory. He's enabled MPs to have their say, when those in power tried to stop them having a say. It's not up to him what they say.

The fact that the MPs delivered a result the PM didn't want and tried to rig the system to avoid, just shows why the PM was so keen to override parliamentary democracy, and that Bercow made the right call.

We should all be grateful, regardless of being left or right or remain/leave. In a few months it might be Corbyn trying to circumvent the commons to try and force thru some far left nonsense, so let's hope the new speaker takes a similar stance.

People saying the good riddance opinions are all to do with Brexit are utterly deluded. This prick has been an utter who has sought controversy and infamy for at least 6 years that I can recall, long before Brexit.

I believe the convention for a retiring speaker is to be elevated to the Lords.

Please let this be the conservatives parting gift NO LORDSHIP. He’s already a self aggrandising traitorous weasel . The only ermine around his neck should be be alive and chewing on it!

They should remind him of his own words when refusing him his seat in the Lords; “If we always adhere to convention nothing would ever change.”

And he continues to embarass himself at the prorogation ceremony.

Just play along with the stupid theatrical ceremony man. The Queen has said it's OK, the courts have said it's OK. It's happening, just deal with it.

All through the evening he got more and more a cartoon character of himself, if that was possible!
As for the last ceremony, he was behaving like a stroppy child

He's certainly taken the Speaker appellation literally. I'd love to see the percentage of HoC time he's taken up with his perorations and would be extremely surprised if it wasn't the highest on record.

You’re being kind to him. He’s been, and is, far worse than that.

Sir Lindsay Harvey Hoyle I'd have thought. Not the worst choice in my view and would satisfy Labour?

There hasn’t been a decent, honest and effective Speaker since Betty Boothroyd

He chooses what they vote for. If he choose the remainer ones(again and again) and none of the pro brexit ones then, ipso facto the votes are focused on remainer issues and ideas.

He went against constitutional advice to do so.

He is known as a sexisf bully but labour wanted him kept as their useful idiot.

Good riddance indeed

A great speaker & perfect time to resign. He well & truly destroyed the Tories plan to oust him & timed his departure in such a way that he will ensure they do things right. Defiant last stand then sail off into the sunset.
I bet Leadsom & co were truly mad smile

and accurate for Bercow
Not really.

Pricks have both use and ornament.

Bercow has neither.

A sound choice IMO. A thoroughly decent man.

Next time someone asks me what bathos means I'll refer them to Bercow's farewell speech.

Harriet Harperson has thrown her name in the hat for the Speakership.

I can't help thinking that you should be automatically excluded if you've ever been a senior Cabinet minister for a government.

Presumably if the current lot try to stitch up the Speakership with one their placemen, any incoming Parliament post-election can simply vote afresh for a new Speaker?

Speaker should be a lawyer not an ex-MP.
