A sound choice IMO. A thoroughly decent man.
He's quite good fun to watch when he has deputised. Old Labour (?), pretty well regarded from what I have read. Not my political leaning, but I would prefer him to Harmen who I just find condescending.

It would also be very good PR if the Tories supported a Labour candidate like him as it would highlight that they really are not after their own stooge but simply want an honest Speaker.
Yep Whoever we get I just hope it is someone aware of the traditions and standards expected of the role.

I assume people are celebrating this because they really want a Labour speaker?
Not really. I'm right of centre for most things, I want the speaker to have gravitas, be impartial, firm and be fair. The last two were not great examples.(Plus if you get a Labour speaker, that's one less who can vote for Labour)
Lindsay Hoyle looks to be a solid parliamentarian - I have a lot of respect for them regardless of their politics.

If the Speaker is doing their job properly it shouldn't matter if they are Tory or Labour or backed Leave or Remain. The Speaker is supposed to be impartial and to represent the whole House.
