It might be just a genuine change of mind over the years as he’s gained experience.

Or possibly as he developed his self serving ego he realised a change was in his personal interest to secure a cushy EU role after his sinecure in the House, which he quite likely has already been promised by Barnier, Sassoli etc. during one of his ‘secret’ meetings.

Usually far more subtle than that. For front line politicians the real payday occurs after they retire from politics. Then they rake it through after dinner speeches and "consultancy". But only if they have followed their paymasters bidding while doing their former day job.

TBH, despite his pomposity I really don’t think he’d be that bothered if/when he doesn’t get one. He’ll be happy enough that he’s left his mark on British politics, albeit for the wrong reasons.

Bercow was getting ready for the after-dinner speech circuit yesterday by practising his impersonations of Tony Benn and Willlie Whitelaw, of which he is clearly very proud. Not sure the MPs saw it the same way. The funniest thing was Bercow attempting to parlay with Rees-Mogg. Although it was well disguised there was a distinct sense of JRM's contempt for the little oik.

Which is reciprocated (and entirely justified).

I'm not sure that annual dinner of the Association of HVAC Engineers (or whatever) will become oversubscribed if Bercow is the speaker...rather the contrary, I imagine.

I suspect that sufficient people are disgusted by him and wouldn't want to be party to putting money in his pocket that it would be a brave person indeed who engaged his services for such an event.

One would have thought the same of Blair; clearly those who engage after dinner speakers do not inhabit planet Earth.

I don't think Blair does many professional awards black tie dos in sweaty ballrooms off Park Lane.

And, on the American rubber chicken circuit, there will be those willing to pay $25,000 a plate because Blair backed Bush up (and hence the USA) in the war on turr. He was also PM, so people would naturally be interested.

IMO, Bercow will be a much harder sell as either a powerful person or as a friend of the USA.

But that suggests corruption. Surely not?

Yeah, but he could do a double act and let his misses work the room laugh

He’d be absolutely crushed if he did not receive a peerage.
