Another day of Parliamentary panto electing a new speaker. Waiting for ballot papers to be printed, for goodness sake! The whole process desperately needs to be dragged into the modern world.

If this continues, I fear fewer people will understand why, in the 21st Century, we still continue with outdated practices with all the ceremony and paraphernalia that continues in both Houses.

Ridiculous!
I agree. I think we need to modernize process while keeping some of the spectacle.
I think there should be added jeopardy.

Whoever polls worst in the second round should be cremated to provide the white smoke to signify a new Speaker has been chosen.

Which spectacle would you keep, genuine question BTW?

Has some merit, have we tried it before?

State opening of parliament.

PMQ is important, even if it a show.

I'd also go for a written constitution. It should take a long time to codify and would be done in many phases.

On the assumption that Sir Lindsay Hoyle has this in the bag, it's the best political news I've heard in a while. The last thing Parliament needs is continuity Bercow.

In terms of the Lords, as Bercow has repeatedly said, convention is there to be broken. I would now like the bullying allegations against him to be retrospectively thoroughly investigated before any decision is made on his "elevation".

Agree 100%. He's not my politics, but I really quite like Hoyle. .

I agree about PMQ's, and the new speaker (whichever), is proposing restricting the time and number of questions which I believe is a good idea.

State opening is an outdated performance but could be re-enacted for the tourists... with stand ins!!!

A written constitution must surely be proposed now, as most of our citizens can read!

I much prefer the slow voting process over a modern electronic one.

It slows the fkers down in bringing yet more legislation.

Look to other Parliaments where they can ram through hundreds of votes per day by just pressing a button (sometimes someone elses too).

Agreed; we've had quite enough of "reforming" speakers.

Valid point, and something I hadn't considered but what about the trees! Think of all the paper wasted today printing and re-printing ballot papers at each and every round of voting!

Will no one consider the planet?

Maybe now is the time for a speaker who isn't a serving MP so that their poor constituency doesn't get disenfranchised for a decade.
No rule preventing anyone standing against them is there, just a tradition, Farage tried once? The TV show is saying that they still work in the constituency? I know not.
Non of the main 3 parties stand against the speaker. Ukip, BNP and the greens all stood against bercow as well as a bloke dressed as a dolphin.

I wrote to him about a matter I wanted him to raise and he basically wrote back saying, terribly sorry I'm not allowed to be political. Pretty useless as my elected MP then.

No ego.

No agenda.

No vendettas.

10 years wasted with the Bercow.

The new era begins.

Congratulations to Mr Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle.

A bit harsh, when you actually look at a lot of the 'controversial' moments relating to him being speaker they tend to relate to Brexit and how he has taken decisions that make things harder for the Government.

Not at all. He has been an obnoxious prat since birth. He had plenty of detractors for things like his bullying and showboating long before Brexit was a word.

Know him from school, I take it?
