Probably not so well known on here but one of the most popular TV anglers of our time.

RIP John

I remember him well, i used to record all his Go Fishing programmes on VHS back in the late 80s when they aired on Channel Four. A great angler, conservationist and champion for clean rivers and freshwater fishing. I visited his tackle shop in Norfolk once many years ago too when it was there.

Shame to hear he's hung up his rods for the last time.

Superb enthusiast, angler and environmentalist, in many ways ahead of his time, a bit like Jack Hargreaves before him. RIP, tight lines.

"Let's put it back straight away". Usually said when it had been out of the water so long that it was almost crispy...

Due to various reasons, I hung up my angling boots a couple of years ago but the best days I EVER had were with my fishing mates. Several of his catchphrases became our staples. We all watched his programmes and all agreed that, had we'd ever been in a boat with him, we would have cheerfully killed him!

RIP John, tight lines.

I've never fished in my life but loved his late TV show. It was his infectious enthusiasm that drew me in. RIP.

I used to go fishing loads as a kid (my school team, second in the School’s National Angling Championship - my finest sporting honour!) but haven’t picked up a rod in 25 years ... used to love his enthusiasm on his shows, a natural on the telly.

Wilson in a nutshell

I'll never forget that time he was fishing for Vundu Catfish, and after forty-odd minutes of fighting it his right arm was fooked and the fish broke his rod in half. Still landed it, though!

Great memories

Go catch 'em all, John

Yep, another fan, sad to seem him go.

Used to fish a lot in my youth, started on general coarse fishing but soon got into carp. Loved his programs, great inspiration. Haven't fished in years but my lad has hinted that he might like to try so maybe we'll be dusting off the gear next spring. He's 7 at the moment so not sure how long the attention span will be smile

one of the few anglers that could keep a mainstream audience interested in an activity that doesn't work well as a spectator sport. loved his go fishing series.
