Has anyone bought back their bike as salvage only to regret it?

I went into the back of a car on Monday, came off the bike then got hit by another car.
Went to hospital and very luckily haven't broken anything, my 2010 KTM 990 Smt was recovered by the police.
Insurance are dealing with it and I was initially told it was going to repaired but now it's going to copart for evaluation due to the age.
Police at the scene told me the damage didn't look bad but you never know.

I do like the bike and it would be a shame for it to be scrapped for fairing damage but if it's going to be impossible to sell at some point in the future and there's any niggling doubt about whether it's really ok I not sure it's worth the hassle.
Wondered if anyone had been through it.

It's probably going to be so cheap as to be disposable, which is fun in it's own way.

I don't tend to regard ex-write off bikes in the same way that I would a car.
It's pretty easy to fix most stuff and replace broken stuff; the only thing you really need to be wary of is a damaged frame.

If it's cheap enough then go for it.

Depends how much they offer it back to you for. When my bike was knocked over I was paid £1600 for the bike and charged £80 to buy it back. The bike was fine, I just replaced the gear lever and carried on riding it.

I had something similar when I crashed my Triumph Sprint 955.
- Paid 2100 when I purchased the bike
- Got 1300 from insurance including the minus for the buy back (full value would have been 1450 or there about)
- Sold it as Cat C on ebay for 600.

Whether you buy it back or not depends of these 3 above factors or how much you think it will cost to put right instead of selling.

Thanks all, if it's a few hundred and with no serious damage it would be a no-brainer.
Should find out in a week.

Um, if for whatever reason you strip it down, I'll buy the oil expansion tank off you! I've been looking for one tongue out

Someone had a oil tank off a smr on ktmforum.co.uk the other day. Wanted 85 quid for it think. Should be the same part no. Give me shout if you need a link but it’s in the bikes and bits for sale section

It's a rare bike. If you're planning on keeping it a long time just repair it, ride it and don't worry about resale. It would be a pity for it to be broken.

Good news and less good news, valuation is fair but the salvage cost for cat N is 40% of that valuation, £2000.
I know there is damage to the lights and fairing on both sides but I don't know if anything important is bent. I'm told the engineer will have looked for enough damage to make repairs uneconomic but then stopped looking.
The cost and scarcity of some parts might be a a problem.
