He is? I don’t get it.

He's making a hand gesture that has also been used by white supremacist / nationalist groups. Not saying that's what his personal intention is, we can't know that, but it's certainly a curious gesture to be making given the known associations. Guy in the basketball photo is also making it. Again, they may not be making it in a knowingly racist way, although I'd argue that's harder to defend in the case of the basketball picture, given the attention is directed towards a black player and the other kids being blacked up. Trying to find other "crazies" photos where they're focussing on a white player.

There's a video about the "Crazies" on the school's own YouTube channel that shows student in black face make-up, so it's difficult to suggest they're not aware of it.

Given the context of the picture and the fact that all the spectators are looking at the black player, it's seems pretty reasonable to assume which version of the symbol they are making!

The reaction of the group was to mess about and one of them decided to stand his ground.

Having now watched the longer video, I concur with NTM.
Out of the two groups, the religious nutters were well out of line. I wouldn't put up with the st they were spouting.
The school kids were being irritating little wkers, but really the Bible bashers were looking to up the anti.
The NA decided his drum would disperse a load of teenagers egging eachother on. They all giggled and one refused to move out the way.
