45th President of the United States, Donald Trump. (Vol 6)
Discussion
Journalists are reporting:
There are police here on the hill circling politicians when they come in for the vote, keeping reporters away from them. This is not normal.
This is fked. The police say they're just "escorting" the senators to the vote. In effect, they're shielding them from taking questions. Never seen this before.
An officer smashed right into NBC's Lee-Anne Caldwell who was walking with a senator. Another reporter, who is pregnant, says she was also shoved. Lots of yelling between reporters and cops here, who are clearly blocking reporters from getting near senators.
Getting some answers on this. It seems this American Bridge staffer Mike Stark was here earlier today and got in the face of a politician. A senator complained about security and this is what we got as a response.

What’s happening today is the president sought an appropriation for a program from congress, he didn’t get as much money for it as he wanted, and he’s trying to seize the appropriations power for himself, redirecting money for other things to his favored program.

This national emergency is on the one year anniversary of the Parkland shooting, and it is not about that.
This national emergency is on the two year anniversary of Trump asking Comey to ignore a Trump campaign official’s lies about Russia, and it’s not about that either.

Rick Wilson (conservative GOP media guy) has weighed in on the "national emergency" with an interesting take on twitter.

Once again he cant think more than 2 mins ahead.
"If an emergency can be manufactured over border security when illegal border crossings are near a 20-year low, as measured by Border Patrol arrests, then it’s a snap to make the case for an emergency over gun deaths, which are near a 20-year high."

I just can't believe the "national crisis" lie is being swallowed.
It's so easy to dispel.
Why aren't the Democrats working harder to show Trump up on this?
I think they will ratchet things up. But it is double edged. One eye will be on how a Dem President could use this to bypass a GOP controlled Congress. Dems got rid of the filibuster to stop the GOP blocking Obama’s federal court judge picks. That bit them on the arse hard when McConnell did the same, one notch up, to get Trump’s SCOTUS picks installed. It's so easy to dispel.

Sometimes you’re the hammer and sometimes you’re the nail. But if it’s your turn to be the nail, chances are one day you’ll be the hammer again.

Pretty much everything he says has been debunked, but his core support is still lapping it up.. by the time one lie is shown up,he's already done 5 more! It's so easy to dispel.

The courts will block this, until it gets to the Supreme court. But don't forget that there's already been court action blocking land being seized on the border to build the wall. The land wanted to build on belongs to people who don't want it and are fighting it through the courts

Trump is declaring a national emergency to bypass Congress, to build a wall we don’t need, to address a crisis that doesn’t exist, by claiming an authority he doesn’t have.
If that sounds like nonsense, it’s because it is. It’s also plainly unconstitutional.

Looks like Burr is completely in trumps camp and is already telling lies for him. He's trying to sign off the Senate Intelligence Committee investigation as nothing found and is telling untruths about Steele and the dossier (proven to be almost 100% true).
Barr is now confirmed by trump as Attorney General
Burr did an interview: "Burr would only say that Steele remained of interest, but OUT OF REACH. 'We've made multiple attempts' ... Burr said, but declined to surmise why Steele would NOT ENGAGE."
Steele submitted written answers to the committee in August. The panel then withdrew the subpoena for his testimony
The body had prepared a subpoena for Steele’s testimony in March 2018, but withdrew it after he provided his written testimony in August. Investigators who have traveled to London since then have not approached Steele for an interview, according to Steele’s lawyer, who declined to be identified due to sensitivities surrounding the probe. Burr suggested in an interview with CBS last week that Steele remained out of reach. “We’ve made multiple attempts,” to elicit a response, Burr said.
Steele’s lawyer said that was “flatly not true,” and that the committee had actually agreed in writing not to seek further information from Steele after he submitted his written testimony. The panel has not reached out to request another interview, the lawyer said.

Some people will say that he’s “not winning”. They don’t realise he’s playing a completely different game. Screw what’s good for the US, as long as he keeps getting public attention and public adulation he’s happy.
The Justice Department has warned the White House a national emergency declaration is nearly certain to be blocked by the courts on, at least, a temporary basis, preventing the immediate implementation of Trump's plan to build the wall,

Hard to see how this could be seen as a win. He wanted $25bn for his wall, shutdown the government because he didn't get $5.7bn, was offered $1.6bn, now it looks like he's goign to have to accept $1.3bn.
Art of the deal indeed.

“Declaring a national emergency would be a lawless act, a gross abuse of the power of the presidency and a desperate attempt to distract from the fact that President Trump broke his core promise to have Mexico pay for his wall.
“It is yet another demonstration of President Trump’s naked contempt for the rule of law. This is not an emergency, and the president’s fearmongering doesn’t make it one. He couldn’t convince Mexico, the American people or their elected representatives to pay for his ineffective and expensive wall, so now he’s trying an end-run around Congress in a desperate attempt to put taxpayers on the hook for it. The Congress will defend our constitutional authorities.”
