Can this 'Emergency' be stopped in the courts? Or can he just do what he wants and take money from other areas?
The problem is that declaring a national emergency does not give him access to new funds. It gives him permission to appropriate funds from other, already funded areas... More specifically, the military budget. So his national emergency will be de-funding the military of however much he wants to take which will make him real unpopular with supporters of the military and the military itself. That's if the emergency gets through the senate and the courts. A lot of republicans are starting to worry about re-election given the massacre in the house of reps. I would not be surprised if they turn against Trump to save their own skins (they are politicians after all).
Throwing your hat into Beto's ring at this point wouldn't be a daft move at all for a sitting Republican.

that just beggars belief. Can you imagine your kid's school sending such a letter out? How this can't be seen as a crisis is unbelievable. Guns over every thing - what a crazy, fked up mess.
Until Americans love their kids more than they love their guns they will continue to die in horrific and avoidable shootings. Edited by captain_cynic on Friday 15th February 13:51

This is America (but not a national emergency).
Can’t imagine living somewhere where even 0.00001% of me thought my kid may get killed at school when I drop them off.
Reminds me of 'Duck and Cover'Can’t imagine living somewhere where even 0.00001% of me thought my kid may get killed at school when I drop them off.
Everyone should watch Kinder Guardians arm the kids not the teachers! It's nuts and coming true.

Apparently for possible shooters (no idea why over here!) plus things like parents who don’t have custody and would take their kids, have restraining orders etc.
Kids under desks, the lot.
Colour me surprised. But I still wouldn’t ever worry about it like I would if I lived in the US.

SO he's declared his national emergency. Interesting times ahead, even for Trump's presidency!
Apparently in the speech announcing it he said ‘I didn’t have to do this’“I just want to get it done faster, that’s all."
So it's not an emergency then?

Schumer and Pelosi: "This is plainly a power grab by a disappointed President, who has gone outside the bounds of the law to try to get what he failed to achieve ... The President is not above the law. The Congress cannot let the President shred the Constitution."
Patrick Leahy: "The President appears intent on stealing money ... for a national emergency that exists entirely in his head ... Let's not forever change the course of the separation of powers in our country simply because the President made a foolish promise he could not keep."
NBC point out how trumps wall was never going to be paid for by Mexico, no matter how he tries to spin it
Now that President Trump has accepted a budget deal that provides for $1.375 billion in funding for barrier-building on the southern border and declared a national emergency in a bid to secure more, the idea that Mexico would pay for the wall appears finally to be retired.
