Russia is a different kettle of fish IMHO. America is supposed to be the beacon of democracy

Given their penchants for gerrymandering, voter suppression, lobbying, and the overall way in which their election campaigns are led by money, I think they've been rather bigging themselves up and the reality is a long way from the image.

I think that this beacon is actually Europe, in reality.

I concur.

Its the lobbying that gets me its encourages corruption with a small c.

Not saying its unique to America but its on an industrial scale

This was an interesting read, and quite relevant:

The overlap between conspiracy theorists and trump supporters is well up there.

Barr hasn't turn up to the house.

Rep Steve Cohen brought a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken to today's hearing, and put it in his place, apparently to suggest that Barr is afraid to testify.

Have I got news for you Tub of lard anyone?

Jerry Nadler opening statement: Given the attorney general's lack of candor before other congressional committees, I believe my colleagues and I were right to insist on the extended questioning.

We must come together to protect the integrity of this chamber. The administration may not dictate the terms of a hearing in this hearing room.

Ladies and gentlemen, the challenge we face is that the President of the U.S. wants desperately to prevent Congress, a co-equal branch of government, from providing any check whatsoever to even his most reckless decisions. He is trying to render Congress inert.

Yes, we will have no choice but to move quickly to hold the attorney general in contempt if he stalls or fails to negotiate in good faith.

Barr failed to check the president's worst instincts ... he has failed to protect the special counsel's investigation from unfair political attacks ...He has failed the men & women of the DOJ by placing the needs of the president over the fair administration of justice.

"If he does not provide this committee with the information it demands, and the respect it deserves, Mr. Barr's moment of accountability will come soon enough."

Shiela Jackson Lee, Judiciary Cmte. member: "Here we stand today with no other option, other than to hold the attorney general in contempt, which we hope that will happen ... I would simply ask the question: Is this the way we want to run this nation?"

Ted Lieu, Judiciary Cmte. member: "Attorney General Bill Barr is now one of the most dangerous men in Washington ... We in Congress will rein him in. We will hold him accountable."

David Cicilline, Judiciary Cmte. member: "We have a responsibility to compel [Barr's] compliance with a lawfully issued subpoena ... If the executive branch can willfully violate lawfully-issued subpoenas, they will have successfully eliminated congressional oversight."

Right - just do it.today

Hearing wraps after 15 minutes. Only Nadler and Collins speak. @RepMattGaetz sought recognition for parliamentary inquiry but Nadler finished his statement, gaveled hearing closed and turned off the mics.
@RepJerryNadler lays out his challenge to colleagues (of both parties): "The challenge we face is that if we don't stand up to him today, together, we risk forever losing the power to stand up to any president in the future."

Very interesting read. The mere idea of any US president being associated with a fellow like Alex Jones should be incomprehensible really. Hardly causes a ripple with this one though, so clusterfkery is the situation.

I like Rachel Maddow - although she does take forever to get to the point.
I think she's pretty partisan but she does do some good reporting. That's her annoyance though: A slightly rambling and conversational way of presenting, though.

Nonetheless, she's revealed some interesting stuff during the current administration's tenure.

How much power does the House or Senate actually have? If they find Barr in contempt or lied does he go to jail? Can they fire him or does that need to come from the president?

They can be impeached, like any other public official, however it's unlikely as if they're willing to go that far they'll just ask for his resignation and Barr would be daft not to offer it.

IIRC, 2/3 of the senate are required to overrule the president if he decides to veto anything.

Would the Senate need to impeach him? Just think as it’s a republican held senate it wouldn’t get very far.

Swamp news.

The U.S. State Department allowed at least seven foreign governments to rent luxury condominiums in New York’s Trump World Tower in 2017 without approval from Congress, according to documents and people familiar with the leases, a potential violation of the U.S. Constitution’s emoluments clause.
The emoluments clause bans U.S. officials from accepting gifts or payments from foreign governments without congressional consent.

Pelosi: “We saw [Barr] commit a crime when he answered your question,” Pelosi told Rep. Charlie Crist (D-Fla.) during a private caucus meeting Thursday morning, according to two sources present for the gathering.

“He lied to Congress. He lied to Congress,” Pelosi said soon after at a news conference. “And if anybody else did that, it would be considered a crime. Nobody is above the law. Not the president of the United States, and not the attorney general.“
