Wow just wow !

French soldiers will be permitted to 'open fire' if lives are threatened by Yellow Vest rioters this weekend, the military governor of Paris said today.

General Bruno Leray's ominous words highlight the growing law and order crisis faced by President Emmanuel Macron as he faces up to the increasingly violent social movement.
It has now been confirmed that the French Army will support some 5,000 police trying to keep order during the 19th Yellow Vest Saturday demonstration in a row in Paris at the weekend.
General Leray told Franceinfo Radio on Friday: 'If their life or that of the people they defend is threatened, they can go up to opening fire.'

General Leray said an unspecified number of soldiers mainly used for anti-terrorism duties would be defending public buildings this Saturday.
'They are subject to the same legal framework as the internal security forces,' he added, while conceding that soldiers have 'different ways of coping' with trouble.

Philippe Capon, of the UNSA police union, said: 'I'm worried about how they will respond in case of attack.'

and some people are worried about french customs procedures in the event of no deal brexit. if a protester is killed the protests to date will be small change in comparison to what will happen in that event, imo.
one of the reader comments from the Daily Mail link:

Don't worry, Macron and his mum will be safe.

Wonder if they'll use the FFL so they can deny it was French Nationals firing on French Nationals.
Soldiers of the Légion Étrangère can apply for French citizenship after three years service, plus a small percentage of applicants to join the Légion are French citizens who claim to be from other French speaking countries, e.g. Belgium and Canada.

BBC finally reporting on the riots, one of their journalists just said that the riots are due to populists wanting simple answers to complex problems. It seems they are going with the Brexit 'everybody who wants change is stupid and doesn't understand' line.
From that Mail link WTAF are they using on their own people now

French security forces used a 'last resort' chemical weapon against them for the first time on Saturday.
Gendarmes confirmed that a 'small amount' of the gas was released close to the Arc de Triomphe.
Video posted online by the independent Taranis news outlet showed the debilitating substance coming out of armoured cars

Wouldn’t the use of a chemical weapon by a state on its citizens be classed as a War Crime ?

I seem to recall calls for Bashar al-Assad to face trial for war crimes for using chemical weapons against his own citizens.

Maybe Macron will cite some mitigating circumstances for doing/alleged to be planning to do?

I'm not sure what the ratios are now but generally it was about 20% French, to be an 'etrangere' their official paperwork was changed to a francophone nation. There were pics of either REC or REI guys, but it's not sure whether they were stock Vigipirate ones or not. REP are mainly committed to Serval/Barkhane in Mali, a tailor made job for the guys.

Yesterday saw the 5th week of protest in Algiers. Riot police chanting and singing with the crowd of 3-4M people, the crowds helped ambulances through, buildings draped in flags, even the litter was picked up afterwards. Extraordinary scenes. Hold the line...

Wonder if that’s why the USAF brought several B52s over last week. Plans to liberate France? hehe

Don't they need "Yellow Vests" if their car breaks down at the side of the road? Maybe lots of cars need to break down in Paris?

She might be 73 and fragile, but she could beat the fudge out of that patronising little metro-wimp with one hand tied behind her back. Staggering attitude from Macron. I have no idea where he gets the neck to say the things he does. It's almost like he wants to be sufficiently outspoken that his lack of authority and effectiveness are overshadowed.

I don't know why, but until last week, I don't believe I'd ever heard him speak - just read what he'd said - and hearing him made is somehow, unbelievably, much, much worse. He will not be remembered well. The trouble is, I think he knows that, and is therefore latching onto the UK Brexit bashing as some means of making a mark on history. Politicians looking to do this are very dangerous.
