With a captive market, it's easier for LUL to jack-up fares than to cut costs.
There are loads of tube alternatives. Dirt cheap Uber, your own bike or Boris bike type schemes, fantastic bus network, Network rail alternatives, and in Central London, walking.
For London, mass transit = overground train or underground train. Where is the competitive pricing between overground and underground? There isn't any, because there's no true competition.

Of course there is no real alternative as witnessed by the chaos whenever the tube has a problem/strike...

Isn’t the average suicide witnessed by a tube driver in their career something like 3 or 4 these days? Personally I’d rather live like a pauper and never have to witness that once never mind three times....
Could be rusbbish, but I used to share a house with a train driver (who was training to be a pilot) and he said you get extra money and a bit of time off when you hit a jumper.

The sooner they automate fully and break the Union, the better. It's ridiculous that these unskilled workers earn so much and hold the city to ransom

This isn't a wonderfully thought out response.

"I would rather not be driving the train that kills someone and be poor"
"But they get extra money I think, according to a friend"

We've established that pablo would rather not have the dead person on the front of his train, regardless of money.

Either that or you're talking about the compensation pilots get when they hit a jumper.

Most tube drivers will never have someone jump in front of their train.

If they do of course they will be entitled to time off and much needed counselling too.
