Most certainly not, it'll just be a firearms team in plain clothes.
Do you think?
Yup looks like cops to me.

"They" would almost certainly be carrying different firearms, comms gear, plate carrier with their admin gear etc etc. Faces would be covered too.

I know.
Certainly the left most 2 in the pic look like police clothing. I live in an area full of armed police (between AWE and Burghfield) - they're a familiar sight here smile

I’d put money on the reason said shotguns in the picture haven’t been used is that someone behind a desk has told them their risk assessment says no. Not that it wouldn’t physically work.
100%

Need a full risk assessment, specific training, alert the medical teams and be prepared for some long absences due to stress and PTSD.

The comedy continues.

Any pic yet?

Can't they just send a bunch of travellers in to nick it?

I’d go with crusties too. “Preventing a higher crime against the planet by committing this one” seems to be their get out of jail card.
Wouldn't they hit Heathrow instead? I thought that was the one being argued over.
They probably wouldn’t know the difference. Modern crusties seem to have studied sociology or geography, so have little understanding of maps.

Max sentence apparantly is 5 years, I just hope they apply the maximum to this idiot when they catch them, and over 100,000 people at least hope so as well.

That footage from inside the jet of a drone flying outside, looks like a rather big machine to me.

When I did my CAA permissions course we did some night flying with a DJI Phantom 4Pro. You could barely see it 50 meters away! Nighttime distance flying is not easy. Also relying of the camera to see where your going isn't easy either.

My guess is the operator is fairly close to the airport. The DJI drones can cover a big distance 2-3 miles (from memory) but you'd not be able to see it.
Most of the automated software Litchi and DJI control software wont allow you to fly in airspace near an airport. I can't see any nav lights either so I'm starting to think its a custom build unit.

As for battery power, the unit could be tethered and be powered from the ground https://www.ntpdrone.com/ in this case I doubt it.

This wont be a cheap thing from Maplin's or the likes of. My dji drone with 3 spare batteries cost £1800 and can fly in good weather for about 27 minutes. windy conditions reduces time. The DJI Inspire has a similar flight time of upto 30 minutes.

for anyone interested heres the spec on the P4 including max altitude and distance https://www.dji.com/phantom-4/info
Reading the comments under that video, I think it was a police helicopter not a drone
ah didn't see them sorry!

Gatwick COO said it appears to be an industrial size drone, so not a Maplin special.

Presumably even if it's not up in the air right now they're not going to risk flights in and out when they know that there is somebody near by with the capability and intent of causing a major incident.

Crash some other drones in to the offending drones, sweep up the pieces before opening the runway again?
A yea, but presumably after bringing it down in bits they will need dress up in CSI overalls, cordon off the area, take photographs, painstakingly pick up all the pieces for evidence, bag, tag and take more photos, sweep the area for more threats etc, etc. Shouldn't take more than 4 or 5 hours...
Given that this has been going on for about 15 hours now, 4/5 hours to sort it out doesn't sound too bad.

I assume they won’t open until it’s found? As you say the risk is too high. But how long would they wait for?

They won’t and we all know that.

Of course that’s if they actually collar someone which I doubt.

Why go looking for a complicated solution, when the simple option of using a police giraffe already exists?

Or an owl?

You might fall down a 'ole. Where would you be if you fell down a 'ole? WHAT ABOUT THE FOG!? Stuck in a hole in the fog? Stuck in a hole in the fog in the middle of the night! WITH AN OWL! Up a tree! Stuck in a 'ole in the middle of a night! Stuck down an 'ole, with an owl! On your own, behind the wall! Lovely old wall! Stuck down a hole with an owl in the middle of the night! It could happen! Stuck down a hole on your own in the middle of the night! WITH AN OWL!

Last time he got involved at an airport, all the British people died in a horrible fireball.

Listening to Radio 2 discussing this topic. Is it just me that finds it slightly offensive to describe someone wot has a drone as a 'pilot'?

Anyone checked that crappy B&B in Bow yet to see if any Russians have booked in for the Xmas season?
