Staff in the control tower will mostly have had a mobile in theih pocket, many will be turned on and set to silent.

That’s how people are.

If a drone were “Buzzing the tower” that to me sounds like it was pretty close.

There were no planes flying.

It’s inconceivable to me that an ATC. Wouldn’t have filmed said drone.
Would they? I often have to have my phone turned off for work reasons and see a sorts of interesting stuff. I don't turn it on, set it to silent and start taking pictures because that's not what professional people do. It's not what other people allow to happen either if phone have to be turned off. It's not how people are at all.

Still, top trolling.

What kind of halfwit would disobey a rule and then advertise the fact that they’ve just disobeyed said rule by releasing video footage proving as much?

Buzzing the tower sounds like a tabloid journalist has watched top gun one too many times.

What has the no planes flying got to do with anything? The only thing it would do is decrease the number of staff in the tower, they’d all be downstairs drinking coffee in the break room.

Have you been to an air traffic control tower or centre? I work in one every day and we are not allowed to have our phones switched on because they can interfere with our radios. So actually there is a rule against it.
Yes I have.
Course you have

I’m fine with people mocking me.

I’ve had it from the time I was the first to say there wasn’t a drone so I’m used to it.

The thing is that the investigation hasn’t revealed a drone and many of the posters who derided me have now changed their views.

Plenty in the control tower had a mobile, it will have been turned on and ready to film any drone.

That may be unprofessional, it may be against rules, but it’s how things are in 2019.

No one filmed one. Not because they couldn’t or shouldn’t but because there wasn’t.

How many people do you think are operational in the tower at any given point? How many would be there when they were just dealing with ground movements because air traffic was grounded? Plenty? A few at most.

Who are you to say that’s how things are in 2019? I work in an ATC ops room, I know exactly how things are in 2019. How often does someone in my workplace leak a video or audio of an emergency or an airborne security threat. Never. Why? Because they’re not that stupid.y

I know a few guys who work in ATC, they switch the phones to airplane mode rather than turning them off.

How many people live near Gatwick? Most of who own phones.

Then you have the media interest in the story drawing the press/public to the area hoping to be the one that captures a photo of a drone. A yet no one got a picture of anything.

The lack of evidence seems startling to me.

Did the military equipment deployed detected anything or is it secret?

It is not allowed. Phones are to be switched off not placed on flight mode.

There’s not a lack of evidence unless the only evidence you consider valid is photographic.

To you maybe, but most of us live in the real world.

During the recent snow an articulated lorry driver decided to try and descend the hill I live on. The driver told at least 3 witnesses he was going to to have a go. There were at least 10 people at various points on the hill. The lorry collected a couple of cars and a skip on the way down and we all witnessed it. Lots of neighbours also saw it from their houses Not one of us captured it on our phones dispite it being about 40ft long and causing carnage.

Of course you would just say there was no articulated lorry smile

In the above analogy there is physical evidence. "carnage" and damaged vehicles even if there is no photo. I have yet to see any physical evidence of the alleged drone at Gatwick other than the couple of broken drones discarded in fields near the airport to try and give some credibility to the story.

You do realise that airplane mode turns off all the phones radios right? The thing that potentially causes issue, the emission of radio signals, that thing that doesn't happen when it's in Airplane mode.

You sound like how the industry was in the late 90's when phones did have to be switched off and there was little in the way of airplane mode, and staff were confused and played it safe.

A phone in airplane mode might as well be a mp3 player or something for all the harm it could potentially do with leaking signals.

The point was some cannot fathom how a drone wasn't photoed in the vast expanse of an airport using a mobile phone. I witnessed a huge incident with a load of other people and not one of us got it on film. My phone was actually in my hand at the time!

There was also a police drone being flown and nobody seems to have photoed that either. Do you suspect the police drone doesn't exist?

You've already discounted physical evidence and witness statements so why would a photo of a drone be compelling?

IIRC using any type of recording device in a control tower without permission is regarded as gross misconduct.

It’s not just the frequencies from a phone, footage being released from inside the tower is also a security risk, they don’t want it ending up on social media etc.

If someone wants to film inside a control tower then this must be authorised in advance, one cannot just whip out a phone and start recording without getting a serious bking.

I’m sure the odd renegade does leave his phone on silent but I very much doubt it’s commonplace, and they certainly wouldn’t be stupid enough to get it out and film a drone.

If you think that the reason nobody filmed the drone is because there wasn’t one then you’re a plonker.
