He's been guest of honour of some pretty dubious organisations in the past (shared top billing with Richard Spencer at one), plus has retweeted AfD on occasion. Indeed. If he was a laissez-faire liberal then presumably he would be less interested in what consenting adults get up to in the bedroom and whether or not women chose to have abortions.

No matter what your political colour, he was hit and he fought back. It doesn't matter what he was hit with.
