People don't like to admit their mistakes.
And of course the famous Ratner "crap" disaster. People might know they aren't buying and perhaps can't afford top quality goods but rubbing the fact in their face isn't good business practice.

Bit of everything by the sounds of it and having an advertising campaign that was against most of their customer base was hardly likely to have helped.
Exactly. Even the left leaning (relatively) US press like wapo, nymag etc recognise Gillette's ad strategy as a disaster, even compared to other 'woke' campaigns like Nike's.
