bmw recall - what a strange state of affairs!

Hi all
took my 435 in 3 weeks ago for a bmw issues recall. Guys apologised when i went to collect as they couldn't return the car as the issue on my car was 'real'. Advised me they were waiting on part from bmw to deal with the issue. I was told 3 days to 3 weeks wait.
3 weeks having passed I was told today they were hopeful the part was arriving at the end of next week and that they had a lot of cars awaiting the work, various models!!
You have to ask...issue a recall but dont have the part!!!!!!!
Currently driving in a Hyundai i40 rental they sorted for me....
I am alone out these appalled by this!!
cheers!!

There's an EGR recall page dedicated to your frustrations, i have just had my 430 xdrive back, the only reason i got it back in 2 weeks was the fact i kicked off so much about being given an I30 that i had an upgrade , there are cars all over the UK waiting for the parts , poor customer service , no communication go and have a read of the dedicated page the worry is though it might make you feel worse one lad has been waiting since October!!!

You are not alone. My 335d went in on 27th December, and I received a text today from the dealer apologising that the replacement EGR is still on back order. took my 435 in 3 weeks ago for a bmw issues recall. I’m not anticipating seeing it again anytime soon.
That seems to be the norm with BMW!
My E46 needed a recall for the passenger airbag, but the 1st time I called to book it in they had no parts! But as it hardly ever carried passengers it wasn't a big problem waiting a couple of months!
Last year I got a recall through the post for the heating/air-con fan resistor on my E91, but when I rang to book it in they didn't have the part! Their advice was to avoid using the fan at high speeds - this was last June/July, so far from helpful. Still I got it done eventually.

A lot of these recalls will start off as an inspection and replace the defective part, but if the damage has already occurred - more is likely to need replacing. like the old 5 series battery cable recall - inspect and if it’s ok replace the cover and grease connection, if it’s alteady damaged then u need to replace the set of cables.
Or vanos recall on the n53 - the recall was just to replace the bolts that hold the vanos hub together- but if the bolts wouldn’t torque up to the correct level then u need to replace the vanos which is a bigger job and requires more parts and time.

Charged for a rental/loaner car when car recalled by dealer????
No way would I accept this, outrageous!
I just had the vanos bolts and battery lead done, dealer in HW even tried to improve a wee scratch on my car and dropped it off FoC. I should also add this is not a dealer I have history with so not like they were being particularly nice to me. Good old fashioned good service I guess...although the wash wasn’t great!

What do people expect BMW to do? - Pluck parts out of thin air when there's a World-wide safety recall going on?
BMW rely on suppliers for parts, and those suppliers are geared up to manufacture and supply BMW with a certain number of parts/assemblies per month only. If BMW order 10,000 parts/assemblies per month, the supplier doesn't manufacture 20,000 parts/ assemblies just in case, and BMW don't tend to have multiple manufacturers all making the same parts/assemblies.
When BMW are faced with a World-wide safety recall out the blue, suddenly they require as many parts/assemblies as they can possibly get per month from it's supplier, to cover the cars being built, and the recall. This can completely overwhelm the suppliers production ability, and cause them a massive backlog, that results in delays for the recalls (BMW are not going to priorities free recall repairs over new car customers unless there is a major, immediate risk to owners)
BMW cannot simply find additional suppliers for the parts, due to contract issues, and the complexity of manufacturing the parts/assembles.
The stock of airbag components that BMW did hold were found to be unsuitable for use due to the issue that caused the recall, and so they had to go back to the original supplier to request hundreds of thousands of replacement airbags.
There was only one manufacturer of the parts, who had to re-manufacture the now obsolete airbag assemblies (and not just for the BMW E46 - Just about every BMW model, and many other manufacturers models of the time were involved in requiring replacement airbags), so there was a major delay in parts supply.
The fact is, safety recalls can cause supply issues for all manufacturers, not just BMW, and more often than not, there's very little the manufacturer can do about the delays!

Plus those manufacturers are eventually having the cost put back on to them as it is their part they supplied that is faulty, that can cripple some smaller companies.

My local dealer has just started charging daily for courtesy cars due to delays on recalls. Mine has just had work done under manufacturer's warranty and he said the recalls are killing them!
Same, my local dealer is booking 3 weeks in advance with no loan car and 5 weeks if you want a loan car. It's all recall stuff keeping them busy. Elliot2000 said:

What Vanos recall for the n53? I have a 2009MY 330i with the n53 engine, and although I have received the 2 recall notices for the battery cable and heater problems, I've heard nothing about the vanos. My E46 was indeed 8+ years old (more like 12+ years) and my E91 is 13+ years old.
Although I got a recall for the heater/A/C blower resistor from BMW I received it before they had any parts.
Send the recall once you have the bits FFS!

The EGR recall is a safety issue as affected cars can catch fire (as indeed some have). Therefore, if BMW waited until they had the parts before issuing the recall you'd have cars driving around that are a known potential safety risk; just imagine the outcry if one of those went up in flames - with someone killed - and it then emerged BMW were fully aware of the problem but had allowed people to continue to drive their cars until replacement parts were available. My E46 was indeed 8+ years old (more like 12+ years) and my E91 is 13+ years old.

So I think BMW are right to take a cautious approach in recalling cars and personally I'd rather lose the use of mine for a few weeks than be driving around in something which has a known fault that makes it potentially unsafe. My only slight irritation is, bearing in mind how long people are likely to be without their vehicles, I think BMW are being a touch stingy with what they're approving as courtesy cars. If you're a high mileage driver who's bought a top-range 3 or 5-series to make that time behind the wheel more pleasant then IMO it's a bit poor to be stuck with a Nissan Juke or a 1.4 Vauxhall Astra for several weeks; not saying a replacement should be absolutely like for like but surely an Insignia/Mondeo or equivalent would be more appropriate?

It’s not difficult to see why is it.... governments expect recalls to be issued quickly especially if it’s a safety issue. BMW also know that they will contact everyone and about 30% of owners will actually respond and get it done. Why buy in 200000 parts when you will only need 60000? The problem is that they don’t know where the demand will be. My E46 was indeed 8+ years old (more like 12+ years) and my E91 is 13+ years old.
