It just said on the BBC news the woman hasn't been interviewed by the Police yet which I find a bit strange. Isn't it normal policy to do this ASAP to get the true story before bits are forgotten or changed?
The best time to sweep things under the carpet is when everyone has got bored and left.

I've been following this thread with some interest as three years ago I was involved in a very similar incident. My fault for pulling out of a crossroad out to an A road, and I was broadsided by the other car doing 65mph, so it was a nasty smash. So all-in-all very similar to the DoE's accident, and me doing the same as him.

The other driver had a broken nose, toe and rib, but evidently got out of the wreck himself. I was out cold for an hour and half while they cut me out and had concussion, amnesia, cardiac contusions, fractured ribs and a punctured lung. The road was closed for three hours.

This was the 7th March and the police did not interview me until the 16th March, so there's no apparent hurry for the police to visit the Duke. The police 's exact words were "I do not think prosecution is appropriate, but I think some education is" and they sent me off for a one day driving awareness course. It never occurred to me that I should write or call the other driver to say sorry and he never asked me to.

So I don't see why the Duke should be done for DD or DWDCA. OK, he's 97 and it would probably be best if he handed in his licence but let's put this in perspective - nobody was badly hurt, nobody's still in hospital and I assume they were both insured, sober, not on the phone and driving roadworthy cars. Treat the poor old bloke like anyone else.

Might be safest to just give him a police escort every time he pops down the shops for a pint of milk and a packet of Woodbines.

The fact he's 97 shouldn't make any difference to what action is taken. The fact that nobody was seriously hurt shouldn't make a difference either - maybe on another occasion they could be very badly injured or killed. Yes treat him like anyone else. The process should be the same for the offence, whatever the outcome, although I agree the Police have a need to be more thorough in the outcome of a major incident in order to reach a more certain conclusion as to the cause.

There would be expert witness statements from one or more royal protection officers which would lead to the DoE being prosecuted or not, and I'm going to suggest the damnation of the DoE in those statements might be inversely proportional to how much they like their cushy job. ( Apart from the adreneline rush shortly after you don't get to the car keys before the nonagenarian scoops them up)

I couldn't care less about his driving.

I'm concerned that he's driving around on public roads without any security, and every would be terrorist knows it.

Pedantry alert: unless they're experts in being witnesses to car accidents, the royal protection officers would just give witness statements.

If we are truly pedants, why are we not demanding the thread title is corrected to reflect that he is 97 and it was a Freelander?

Wonder where he's actually going when he's out driving.

It's not like he ever needs to pop down the Co-Op for some milk/fags/bread, is it ? Or nip over to his mate's, or actually most of the normal things that the rest of the world needs to use a car for.

Is there some part of the Sandringham estate that's only accessible via the public road, rather within the private grounds ?

The Sandringham estate is of significant size and crosses a number of public roads therefore he would use public roads to get around

He’s not going to be much leverage for a terrorist, he’s only got one more thing left to do anyway...

I don't think that Phil the Greek would be a very co-operative hostage, your average terrorist would probably be pleased to release him after a few hours.

Do you have kids? If a random decrepit old man drove into them and broke their wrist, you’d be ok with that? Or just ok if the decrepit old man was Phil the Greek?
I had you down as many unpleasant things, but a think-of-the-children-ist is a new one for the list.
