I am looking at taken a second job, to only gain experience, which would be 3hrs per week at national living wage.

I current have a full time job. But wanted to know if my tax code would change on my main job? Which would flag up on the payroll at my current job?

Many thanks

I have a similar situation brewing. As I understand it, your tax code on the second job will be the bog standard code (approx 11k I think) so you will be taxed based upon what is due based upon your earnings at the second job at that code. In my case I’m 40% threshold on the main job and the second job is 8k so I will pay no tax at source on the second job but HMRC will reconcile when they catch up I.e. they will demand 40% of my 8k by smashing the tax code on my main job.

I thought they usually just taxed at either basic or higher rate so keep things simple?

Well, currently earning 18k, and this second job will be for 6 months, 3hrs per week. I couldn’t care for the money, it’s all to help my overall qualification.

So with that, I am guessing my main job tax code wouldn’t change?

Your second job will use the tax code BR (basic rate), this means you will be taxed at 20% with no tax free threshold.

In terms of your main job, I assume you are asking about your tax code as you don't want them to find out you have a second job?

Thanks

My main job, basically yes. It’s not against my contract etc, but they might feel cheated, so I rather them not know. But if they asked then I would speak up.

Thanks

I have 1 full time job and then a casual (0 hours) role to earn a bit extra here and there.

I phoned the tax office and asked them to keep all my allowance on my main job so I have a tax code of 1185L for my main job and 0T for any casual work that is carried out.

Your main employer should not notice any difference.

The tax code on your second job will be BR and you should be taxed at 20%.

If your combined earnings push you into the higher rate band (or if you’re already in the higher rate band) then you will be underpaying tax.(ie in your 2nd job you’re paying tax at only 20% when it should be 40%) This will be corrected by HMRC by amending the tax code for your main job in the following year.
