I'm reading comment from the authorities that is an 'accident', so was it one of the construction workers or more responsible up on the scaffolding? They've been removing works from up there for a while now.

Or more sinister?
There has been a spate of attacks on Catholic churches etc this year.

tbh the amount of hotels in uk that have burnt in the last year from restoration work am not surprised. you would have thought they would have had a plan though

Plus the Glasgow School of Art, twice, sadly.

How much of the structure is timber? Hoping it’s just the roof and it burns itself out!

They have folded away the outside water hose from the ground. Nothing can reach at that hight.

Scary to see the firefighters on the top of the building knowing that it can colaps at any time! Balls of steel.

the beeb just said, the NAZI in charge of Paris ignored orders from Berlin to 'burn' Paris, and allowed Notre Dame and the rest to survive.

good viewing on BBC4 they now have a serious water cannon style platform spraying water in. It looks like they could do with another 20 of them... Very sad. Was there a couple of years ago, amazing building even to an atheist like me...

No, it's normal to feel sadness over beautiful architecture burning down to the ground. All the history frown

This. Melted lead and associated fumes everywhere, I would not want to be in the vicinity of any of that smoke!

Given the amount of very well seasoned timber in thay structure, I suspect it'll be a total loss much like the famous bombed out church in Liverpool.
However, given the ESA and the Cutty Sark have both been successfully rebuilt after major fire I wonder if the same thing could be attempted on a much larger scale?
