Sweden has a rather better re-offending rate than us.
You have to get caught to become a re-offender, and only 1 in 7 crimes are solved. That means that someone can be tied to the crime but not necessarily convicted for it. To be a re-offender in Sweden you have to be monumentally stupid or really unlucky.
The US and UK have fewer crimes solved and a much higher re-offending rate.
You don't pay nearly as much tax for the poor show though.
Perhaps a re-offending rate that's half (IIRC) ours, with a better crime-solving rate is worth paying for.

Regardless, there are so many variables between different countries which is why I resort to the evidence. If you fail to address the causes of crime with individuals you end up with revolving door systems like we have in the UK.

If we take burglary as an example, Sweden 22 200 burglaries reported - 4% solved. Finland 4 800 - 25%, Norway 3 800 - 15%.

Good show! I hope he persuades Jules Holland etc to donate & they can build a proper club house with security.
Is there the slightest chance that the filthy scrotes will feel ANY remorse over this, given the outpouring of empathy for the victims??????

Effective at deterring petty crime but at what cost.

I remember as a kid every time I walked to the bus stop that the phone box or bus shelter would have been vandalised, that doesn’t seem to be the case any more. I know we have no shortage of scrotes in this country with no respect for anything but I don’t think things are worse than they used to be unless you’re unfortunate enough to live in a sink estate except now your Vauxhall Nova doesn’t go missing every night because the scrotes nick Golf R’s

Fixed that for you.

Bad enough they don't give a st about someone else's property, it's clear they have no empathy for a living creature. They are a complete waste of oxygen, no sympathy for upbringing now. Hope the fkers get every bone in their body broken.

Disagree. Phone boxes hardly exist anymore. Local bus shelter is now vandal proof steel construction & car security is umpteen times better than it was....
Fair comments by others that crime is far more widely reported these days, but I don't recall there being such wanton levels of criminality, including knife crime, drugs etc., as 'back in the day', mid-80s.
Perhaps I'm older, wiser & have the rose tinted specs on & am completely wrong - I still think the fkers should be banished, or worse. The rest of the snowflakes can't even wire a bloody plug these days.....

The increase in knife crime is as a result of political interference with policing. It was the same with short sharp shock. It gave rise to a high degree of recidivism, and all for the sake of getting votes from people who didn't realise crime rates were dropping.

We live in a country where crime is considerably lower than the average for the past 50 years. There are any number of reasons for this. It could be lower.

I don't think there's any evidence to suggest that wanton crime has bucked the trend of the rest of crimes. As others have pointed out, reporting is much more frequent nowadays and crimes that would have been kept local in the past are now plashed across all sorts of media, including PH.

I was absolutely pristine in my conduct when I was a kid. I was respectful of the police, like everyone else in those days, despite the high level of corruption, which was hardly a secret. I could wire a plug, bloody or not, and a socket come to that. Perhaps that's what made us all so law abiding.

Except the Krays of course, and the Richardsons. And the gangs that replaced them when they went under: the clubbers and the car dealers.

I don't so much think your glasses are rose-tinted but were completely black in days of your youth, 'cause there was at least as much crime going on, and statistically there was likely to have been more.

Yet we are doing things badly in this country. We are well behind the average in most aspects of dealing with crime and criminals. The problem is that instead of listening to those who have done the research and know what produces results, let's call them the intelligent, or at least well-informed snowflakes, people follow what those who want to use violence as a way out of the problems of crimes and criminals, despite it not working in the past, ever, and not working now.

Reading that made me feel sad beyond words. I guess those kids must have had pretty miserable lives to get enjoyment out of doing that, and they’ve probably got a lot worse to come.

Still, put me in a room with them and give me a baseball bat and no consequences, and I would get enjoyment out of beating them to death, so I’m no better.

Similarly, some young scamps locally stamped to death a hedgehog and it's babies.

Presumably because there's no youth clubs or because of society or something something.

If there's no deterrent it's only going to get worse, knocking a copper flat out was a £165 fine on some Crime doc the other day.
Watching any of these docs ( Traffic cops, Interceptors, Cops on a hill etc) the courts are not fit for purpose, needs a complete overhaul.

Indeed. Don't hold your breath though.

I read somewhere that the main concern for the scrotes was not the punishment but the fear of being caught. The lack of policing significantly reduces the chances of being caught so may be we need to look at that.

This being a motoring forum, we see similar on the roads with poor and aggressive driving.

That's an odd comment. How does it have any relevance to the modern world? confused

My eldest is 16. By the time she was born, the law had required all appliances to be sold with plugs attached for the previous 11 years. I can count on one hand (and have fingers left over) the number of times I've had to change a plug since the turn of the century. The only reasons I can see for it these days are if you've damaged the power cable, you want to permanently change the country in which you want to use an appliance or you want to pass the power cable through a hole in a cabinet or something. How often does anyone really do that?

Pedantry maybe, but it's worth differentiating between areas where we're maybe letting our kids down by not imparting knowledge, and areas where we should recognise that knowledge is no longer worth imparting.

Whenever someone bangs on about people not knowing how to wire a plug, I always picture them needing to do so for the first time in decades and being angrily flummoxed by the colours being "wrong".

I do wonder how long it will be before it is “illegal” to fit / change plugs.
