Whilst here in the U.K. some celebrated that earlier this year we were able to supply all of our energy needs without a single contribution from coal. It’s come at a heavy cost in the form of our energy bills but at least we no longer have smog.
Comes as a kick in the teeth to see our EU Member partners rely upon burning coal/lignite to the value of 47% of their energy needs. Somewhat an uneven playing field.
I have long been an advocate of clean coal tech’ but now recognise that is now consigned to the technological bin.
This week National news has focused upon our need to switch diets from meat based onto a vegetarian menu, help save the planet.
Are we the only Country that takes this stuff seriously, certainly feels like it at times?

Odd thread title. Some might even consider it provocative.

Is it it good that we’re trying to lead the world in something? Whether it’s renewables or whatever?

Just because a.n.other seems behind the times doesn’t mean we shouldn’t bother. Surely in these uncertain times we should now, more than ever, be setting out our stall on how things can be done?

We had no sewer system at one time and as time went on we introduced it to the envy of the world and to the health and wellbeing of the population. Many 3rd world countries still don’t - should we have followed their example and not bothered?

You say electricity is expensive over here and I have to laugh!

When I was living in Germany we were paying 150 euros a month for a 2 bed house. This was on top of oil for heating and hot water!

Back in the UK I've signed up for 100% renewable electricity supplier (whatever that means) and it's ~40 quid on the same size house!

Back on topic. Germany is committed to closing all of its nuclear power stations by 2022. Could be a reason for increased use of coal?

We were an incredibly rich country once, now we tax the granny out of everyone to pay for what often seems like vanity projects for retiring politicians.

Any stats to show if their coal use has increased or decreased over the years?

This is it. After Japan's issues the German government decided they better not use nuclear any more and shifted to coal almost overnight.

I mean, it makes sense, Germany is extremely susceptible to earthquakes and tidal waves...

Cheers! So the use in renewables has increased quite a bit since the late 90s while dirty methods are decreasing. Interesting that they use more renewables than we do.

To a large extent their renewables have replaced nuclear rather than coal.

Especially when you consider alot of the technology that provides Britain with windpower comes from Siemens (German), Enercon (German) and Nordex (Also German).

I'm not sure we take it that seriously. You should see the fuss some people make over not having everything they buy put in a plastic bag.

This is the biggest myth/lie of the lot, propagated by religious zealots and international food/chemical/pharma corporations.
Vast swathes of monoculture to the detriment of anything and everything else is the biggest threat to the planet. Desertification is rife. Restoration of grasslands can recapture carbon far faster and more effectively than any forest and woodland project.
