What I can see here is the conservatives making the same mistake as in 2017. By focusing almost entirely on one thing (attacking Corbyn in 2017 and Brexit this time around), they've totally failed to show any empathy for people who have other issues to worry about.

People have everyday concerns about all the usual things, and all Boris can do is talk about his 'oven ready' POS deal. As a topic it's not the only show in town and people are left believing the conservatives don't care about people.

There are huge swathes of people exasperated because they don't see anyone credible to vote for. They do say the electorate gets the government it deserves. Looks like it's never truer than now.
That fking awful video from earlier is the perfect demonstration of this.

As Peston points out on Twitter Johnson's refusal to look at the picture of a kid lying on a hospital floor is him saying "I don't want to own this".

There's no empathy there to show.
It was a complete ambush. One up from a milkshake. Some random person thrusting a phone at him, a photo that could be anything, a story that could be completely made up, no way of checking or verifying anything, and if he says the wrong thing we end up with a Marxist government. What do you want him to do? Say ‘oh that’s all my fault sorry, we were trying to repay a huge compounding deficit that Labour ran up but we’ve failed you in this case, sorry’

I don’t know the story whatsoever but people exploiting their children for political capital is not on. The father could approach his own MP there was no need to accost Mr Boris Johnson. And no child of mine would be sleeping on a hospital floor on a pile of coats how utterly absurd.

It's an ITV reporter asking our Prime Minister a question.

"Ambush" indeed.

Give over.

Munchetty knows she's bullet proof. She's of Asian heritage and is able to say and do more or less what she likes. She can't be sidelined or sacked because of that.

I’d have to respectfully disagree
It was a trap for Johnson
If the guy is a credible journalist there are plenty of ways of asking someone about something without accosting them
Allow someone to verify and look into something
It was a stunt designed to wrong foot Mr Boris Johnson and you know it full well
And a stunt that exploited a sick child. Disgusting and I’m surprised a man of your integrity supports such immoral tactics.

Jake, I think you need to stop with all the "marxist" and "but Corbyn" stuff and just take a look at the video.

Watch it a couple of times.

It's simply awful.

It can't be defended and I'm not sure why you'd even try to do so.

Suspect you’ve not seen the footage - it was an interview with a local ITV reporter. It just gets worse the more you see it.

Exactly.

An ambush involves one party knowing more than the other and using it to surprise 'the enemy', e.g. one army knowing the troop positions / movements of the other (but not vice versa) or in this case knowledge of the existence of a picture of a sick child and the information around it. It can only work that way. It was self-evidently an ambush of somebody's enemy, Boris.

Indeed. it's amazing the amount of people being sucked in by the oh so obvious set up.

I see Johnson has had to cancel yet another event in Bishops Auckland due to Labour activists the same type as those paying for taxis so labour supporters can accost Hancock.

It seems children regardless of age can be used to score political points if the parent/s is/are that way inclined, the latest Labour PPB features a doctor using the death of his own child to score points. It really is getting desperate now to stop the Tories and one wonders where it will all end with a few days still to go.

You know what, you’re right, utterly indefensible. How could a reporter possibly expect Johnson to know the details or make comments in an individual case. Bojo wasn’t getting drawn into that and what good would it have done? BoJo took a high level view of the issues and answered about the NHS. Nothing else he could do. Talk about trying to manufacture a story and falling on your ass.

"ambush"

"troops"

"the enemy"

Didn't realise that's how we treat journalists asking politically inconvenient questions of a Prime Minister whose only answer to a photo of a sick kid seems to be "get Brexit done".

It's staggering that anyone would watch that interview and even attempt to defend it.

Staggering but entirely unsurprising.

No, I'm referring to the image of the boy on the floor, which featured on the front page of the Mirror.

You said the Prime Minister was ambushed today by an ITV journalist.

Yet the interview seemed to be a formal one and the subject on his phone was the main story in one of the largest newspapers of the moment.

For us to accept it was an ambush, you'd have to believe the prime minister, in an election campaign, was unaware of the lead story in the biggest left-wing tabloid in the country. Is that believable?

And in any case, in the event is was entirely new news to him, his reaction was still out of step with that you'd expect from the prime minister responsible for the NHS, or even a reasonable human being.

Doesn't matter if it was an ambush or not, the point is Johnson proved himself utterly incapable of dealing with the situation. He couldn't find any words or reaction that would be suitable, so he simply made the problem go away by hiding the phone.

This is just like the AN interview farce, ooh, I might get a tricky question so I'll make it go away but ignoring it.

Some MPs chose (as is their right) to vote against his wishes, so he made the problem go away by sacking them.

Any time things get a little bit tricky Johnson reverts to his natural behaviour, which is "Pretend it didn't happen". It is utterly bizarre behaviour.

Presumably this is why he won't admit to how many kids he's fathered "oops, just pretend it didn't happen, everythings fine..."

Your comments about The Mirror are absurd, to people with a brain it is a deplorable pile of rubbish that no serious person would even glance at. Cumulative readership numbers for every newspaper with a higher circulation than the Mirror is 5.4 million. Mirror circulation not even 500k

Your puffery about the Mirror being ‘The biggest left wing tabloid’ is silly. I could just as easily say The Mirror is the only left wing newspaper in the UK with a circulation higher than The Morning Star (which is about 10k before you ask)

Or here’s another one, you are the second best poster on PistonHeads with the letters Ja**Smith forming the start of their username. Meaningless

The way people try to twist and distort words to fit their agenda is frightening.

BoJo could have handled it better of course but it wasn’t him who made the boy Ill. Well I haven’t checked Corbyn’s Twitter feed, one of the top 100 million people to follow on Social Media. Maybe he did and the right wing press covered it up.

Seriously? “Well the mirror is a stupid newspaper that no one reads, so Boris should not have been told about the lead story” is your argument? We are rea reaching Trumpian levels of reality distortion here.

That's not my issue, it's her complete lack of intellect, no ability to think and question the world she is reporting on that annoys me.

Steph McGovern sounds thick as, err a northern bird, (and I'm sophisticated and from Yorkshire) but she is light years ahead in her understanding of politics and government and economics compared to Munchetty.

Munchetty is just dumb and clueless.

Anyway, we're way off topic here, so probably best that we leave it there. thumbup
