I never said WTO was a panacea for all ills, it's just a set of default trading arrangements which would facilitate trade without a specific deal.
The USA and China, together with a number of other nations, impose tariffs which do not comply with the WTO. There is nothing to stop them, apart from the WTO's own regulatory 'court'. This is the body that the USA has been blocking appointments to for a long time. At its present state, it has been described as intractable. However, more than half - it's difficult to go beyond that, but it is more than enough for my point - have their terms ending in December.

To put it briefly, there is no way disputes will be heard.

A quote from Raab, whom I might suggest knows stuff, said a few months ago that it was a 'bold decision' to base our national economy on an organisation that struggles with a world that has turned its back on multilateralism.

The head of the WTO said that it will do serious harm to multilateral trading.

There is nothing default about WTO. It does not, in any effective manner, exist. The system has fallen apart.

In effect it means that any negotiations with other countries are on a 1:1 basis.

All this is online but I wonder how many of those who quote WTO have bothered.

There's a meeting in 2020 of ministers on WTO. Expectations are low.

It's rash to pin our trading plans on something that is nothing more than wishful thinking.

You seem a bit put out laugh. 19% is still a fairly low rate and if Corbyn's Commies get in it will go up to 26%.

Arcuri not happy today (on the news, Victoria Derbyshire program). First item up on todays show on iPlayer after the headline, quite a long interview.
Breakdown here

What does she have in her back pocket? One contact with the No 10 office got someone answering with a fake Chinese accent (her words). She is not happy.

Meanwhile Lebedev Jnr+snr run a piece in the Mail running against the Guardian article on Boris meeting Snr Lebedev on the qt.

And when that fails to increase the take they’ll do the obvious and increase it again

Boris tells it how it is, unlike Comrade Corbyn. Labour doesn’t need the Russians to commit election abuse. The fact the usual suspects are quiet upon Labour pre-manifesto pledges is telling. It is not credible that the shadow chancellor can stand up in media and make up new accounting practice and outright lie on advice they have on tax treaties. On talking to Clifford Chance on the Labour tax plans on Tech giants; the OECD and Clifford Chance basically said "what the fk". Ok, what they actually said was:

"129 countries are right now at the OECD changing the way multinationals are taxed. One country cannot go it alone, politically AND LEGALLY that's not going to fly, it would breach our tax treaties”.

So, McDonnell and other front benchers are talking outright lies (he claimed it was validated), nonsense AND not getting called out on it? Oh, and if you think you have a problem with a No Deal BREXIT getting goods into Europe, wait until you rip up double taxation treaty and go unitary. No corporate with an international presence would base here. It’s 100% anti-business. The 55bn a year of fiscal drop they promise will be a drop in the ocean to what goes out the door elsewhere.

But Boris talking common sense, does not compute, does not compute, does not compute….

Would you be happy if they increased your tax rate by 2%?

I saw the interview; quite bizarre. All I can hope (without much expectation of not being disappointed) is that the chump exercises better judgment these days...

Well in actual fact they have just postponed cutting it by 2% not increasing it. As long as you have structured your affairs correctly you are still likely paying a lower combined Tax and NI percentage than someone on PAYE.

It is 2% higher than what was scheduled. That's an increase in my book.

My income next year will be lower than it would otherwise have been.

He doesn't exercise any discretion.

There are some statements in the chat which seem like threats. She appears to be saying she has some secrets that, through loyalty, she has not shared. I doubt anything will come of them. If she was going to spill the beans, the said beans would have been spilt, or spilled in deference to our American friend - but not close friend.

That said, she's reportedly had her laptop stolen. I believe her. However, it does give her carte blanche to feed info into channels and then suggest it must have been the thief who did so.

Wow. She's mental. I appreciate that that's not the most insightful comment, but that's a 3 minute rant on TV about a Prime Minister not returning your call.

I can't wait for the next episode!

He does seem to have taken "fk business" a bit too literally.

It'll be fascinating to see if there's more to come.

Piers Morgan ripped her to pieces this morning she came across as a desperate love sick child. Clearly she is holding back - maybe a better pay deal with another news outlet?!
