I don't know the circumstances of this nurse, and frankly can't be bothered to invest time finding out, but she is one of millions of young ladies who have the 'want it all and want it now' mentality that social norms back in the dark ages prevented, including the so-called shotgun weddings.

I shan't be donating!
You know nothing of her circumstances yet know she wants it all and wants it now?

The Mirror article notes that her child is autistic, which may add to the childcare issues. But as noted earler being a single parent, in a moderatley paid band 5 NHS job, and commuting into central London (that is the NHS trust she seems to work for) are not compatible. At her age I would love to have worked in central London for the career opportunities but decided it wouldn't work. If she asked me I'd suggest getting a post closer to home - cutting her travelling and possibly childcare costs too. Should be possible to get £3-400 a month back, and ease her crunch considerably.

If you read my post I am not singling her out but simply highlighting that a single mother with a career and cannot make ends meet, apparently, is a function of modern society and there are a hell of lot more that don't even bother with the 'career' or husband/partner bit but expect to still have the 'want it all and want it now' mentality and I haven't even started on foreign holidays ... 'cos they so need a break!

Her travel costs are a lot more than the price of a monthly travelcard - most curious......
Not really. If you’re travelling from, say, the Essex heartlands like Colchester or Ipswich (which are very popular commuter towns into London) and you add a travel card on top then it will easily be around what this nurse is paying and that’s before you add in any costs of getting to and from her home station.

Colchester to Liverpool St plus a travel card is something like £6500.

Commuting into London can be veeerrrrryyy expensive.

That is a lot... is she getting chauffeured to work? Is it the parking charges? Season ticket on our joke train network?

Even all in (fuel, Insurance, depreciation etc) my travel to work costs just over half that and I’m driving 70 miles a day minimum.

I think I'd re-locate rather than beg.

That's because you understand you're accountable for your life choices.

It's possible you misunderstand- she's contributing towards a very generous pension scheme. It's entirely possible that she will keep records of all donations & refund them from this pension income in future years.

I understand that nurses are all 'angels' so this seems fairly likely.

Can someone elaborate on her payslip as it baffles me?
Taxable pay £2657.12
Total pay £2929.57 yet at the top it states salary £30112

I can't see any overtime listed unless it's been blacked out

It’s almost as if being a cardiac nurse, a single parent, and living in London are not fundamentally compatible life choices.

Pick two.
So only cardiac nurses in London can be single and childless, or be married?
How about we pay nurses in London more.

NHS pension I would imagine reduces taxable pay

We already do. 20% increase, minimum £4k, maximum £6k.

She should drop to part-time and do bank shifts with an agency. Or work somewhere closer to home, most hospitals are desperate for staff so doubt she’d struggle to find a job.

But doesn't pension deduction come from the gross earnings?
If so her salary should show as £35k ish not £30k ish

Should we pay less if they decide to live somewhere cheaper and not have children

From her Salary and take home pay she has blacked out a fair amount of cash in other payments.
If she is taking home £2050 thats the equivalent of about £35k per annum. Assume the extra amount is london weighting too.

It’s an area I have discussed often with my colleagues in the NHS.
Given the amount of Staff in the NHS on band 2 3 and 4 getting paid between £15k and £22k, How the hell do they survive in London ?

Alright saying move out of London but it would grind to a halt if all lower paid workers left the big smoke.

Then who works in London? Or do we want our cardiac nurses coming in after an hour and half commute every time.
