From what's being reported, it seems like it.

With the Northern Irish driver being arrested on suspicion of murder.

Usual SOP for such an event? Or indication of something greater than an accident?

I would imagine so. Awful situation. I’d imagine the officer/s who found that will have a hard time.

It will almost undoubtedly be down to suffocation. It's not the first time this has happened - although I can't recall an incident on this scale before.

Sounds like a load of foreigners attempting illegal entry. Crazy we spend all this money on UK Border Force and they cant detect almost 40 people in the back of a truck.

I agree, but shouldn't it be man slaughter?

Totally this. Can’t imagine how awful it must have been for them if it was suffocation as suggested (as is most likely). We have no idea how lucky we are in this country.

Wasn't this a plot line in the wire? Are containers usually air tight?

The last one was Perry Wacker who had 58 dead people in his trailer at Dover East, he got 14 years.

I think most work is intelligence lead rather than inspecting every container. The size of the border force needed and the delays to inspect/X-ray every container would be huge.

I’d not read to much into the driver bring arrested at this stage

He has been found in possession of 39 corpses

.. . he has questions to answer and the Police have to follow the rules of evidence and procedures

Arresting him is completely normal and to be expected and allows an investigation to be thorough

Some are, some aren't. Most artic trailers are 70-100m3. A human requires about 10m3 of air per 24 hours.... and of course the o2 levels drop and respiration rates can go up and you end up on the wrong side of the curve quite quickly with say 40 people in there.

Bloody foreigners, coming here and dying in our trailers

And yes, some things are more difficult than others, like going to shop to buy bread isnt the same as checking 10,000 lorries a day
