From looking at the video on sky news it seems a random spot to have stopped the lorry. On a road opposite a T junction which may indicate the dirver was stopped by police?

I wonder if it was the lorry unit that entered the UK on Saturday while the container/trailer was shipped via another route?

Who knows how long the people must have spent in there in what would be a sealed fridge unit.
I live local. Usual for lorries to overnight there.

I notice the mail isn't accepting comments on their article for this, I'd imagine many of them would be along either the lines of "this won't happen again if we get no deal" or zero sympathy "they got what they deserve" remarks

That is a reefer trailer and not a container....

My educated guess would be that they have gotten in and then it's been locked (usually you have a way of opening the doors from inside - but when doing euro work you might put a padlock on ironically to stop people getting in and theft). The fridge then has gotten down to between +2 to -20 degrees Celcius and the people inside were trapped and froze to death.

With a fridge going full whack even when stopped the driver would never have heard and pleas for help. Usually, you put it on stop start mode (so it kicks in and out) but depending on what he was carrying that sometimes isn't possible and you leave it on continuous. What's more some drivers prefer gentle continuous humming rather than it kicking in and out.

Don't the trailers have tamper-proof devices to show they haven't been opened? Is it a driver's duty to keep checking them after every stop?
It is the driver's responsibility to ensure he doesn't have any visitors, I believe the fine is £2k per guest.
Chap I know was driving an 18 tonner back from Germany with a load of furniture and stopped over night 200 miles from the Tunnel.

Back of truck was locked with a padlock. He checked the lock next morning, all seemed fine so drove nonstop to Tunnel.

6 illegals found in back of truck at Tunnel Freight Terminal. Padlock had been cut open and glued back together.

After some questions driver was free to go, no fines.

Lad at our firm had over a dozen in his trailer after coming back from Paris.

They are desperate and insprired people. They will cut holes in the roofs and even cling onto the underside of the trailer. Now anyone reckons a driver should be inspecting a roof 4m in the air is beyond me.

Generally speaking if you can show you have tried your best you won't get fined. It's if you do nothing that they whack you with fines.

On the topic of fines it's a disgrace. The drivers vehicle might be damaged etc - he is the victim of a crime. Yet he is being blamed. It's not a truck drivers job to secure the borders. Why does the ferry captain not get a fine as well?

The police were called by the ambulance service - so can we assume that a) the lorry wasn’t pulled over by the police, b) presumably the driver called the ambulance when noticing something was wrong?

Willing to bet the driver pulled over and was about to go in and do a delivery. He has checked his temperatures and taken the lock off to check it's all good (pallets not moved etc as they willl usually reject them if they have so you sort it out just outside). Then had the shock of his life and 999'd it. If you find that place on google maps I'm nearly certain he'd be delivering there.

25 years old. Driving a blinged up tang motor. Probably a happy bloke. Now this. National media semi accusing him of being dodgy. Police nicking him for mass murder. It must be horrific for the poor bloke...

Currently on an ADR course, we've been told of a few ways illegals get in lorries.

Padlock glued was one of them.

Printing a fake part for the plastic tag on the doors was another.

Don't turn it into a Brexit thread.
Funny how border security and Brexit are inextricably linked.
This thread is about a tragic huge loss of life but if you want to bang on about Brexit, despite the numerous other threads on the subject, knock yourself out.

A news report I just heard with a statement from Priti Patel suggested it came in to Holyhead on the 19th so may have contained bodies for some time frown

Diane Abbott also had a stab at a statement in response, it didn't add much to the initial one but she managed to add some Brexit comments and suggested that we need to open up legitimate routes for refugees and asylum seekers to prevent this kind of thing happening.

It’s the truck driver’s job to keep his truck secure.

The Mail won't be acepting comments as the police are investigating what crime has been committed. Same as any crime story.

Not really. As said earlier, most of the tricks to gain access are well known, it just takes the commitment to check properly.

Commitment, and a ladder. Stored somewhere in your cab. For you to use each time you pull away from a traffic light.

Commitment. All the drivers need is more commitment...

Friend of mine worked in child and sex trafficking, police before any smartarse comments, this is a well known route to get people into mainland UK from eastern Europe. Holyhead is the UKs second biggest port and it at capacity so trucks are just waved through.
He said unless they are given proper intel then there is no chance of stopping the trafficking.

Edited by gizlaroc on Wednesday 23 October 11:21
The former head of UK Customs was on the one o’clock news on R4 and said the two things that are highly unusual about this case are the use of a container and the route via Holyhead, which he said he had never seen in his career.

Nothing like a bit over exaggeration.

It's up to you to keep your car secure. Leave the keys in it and once it's been nicked, see if the insurance company pay out.
