The business case reckons £113 million to implement the scheme over the next 10 years.

They were initially going ahead with option 1 or 2 and now they’ve merged it into option 3 which is basically both of them. Detailed map and explanation is here...

I can understand the stretches near the hospital and Baldwin street they’ve targeted. Both have high buildings either side so the nasties tend to sit at street level rather than dissipate - but some of the stuff around Cumberland basin is there just to discourage cars into Bristol rather than tackling a specific problem area.

Interestingly their business case also highlights the risk to their own staff not being able to get to work and how this may impact the councils service... so they are well aware it’s going to impact people’s lives.

I work opposite Temple Meads, so would be in this zone.

It seems bonkers to me that my EU6 GLC350d is banned, yet my 2006 5.5V8 is allowed in. Wibble.

Not bizarre at all.
When looking at actual NOx emissions (not the limits), even the latest 2019 EU6d-temp diesel cars tend to emit significantly higher levels than 2006 petrol cars.

Sure, huge progress has been made, and the latest diesel cars emit around 1.5x what a petrol emits, when in 2006 it was closer to 10x.

They’re including Euro 6 diesels but allowing all petrols in?, they really haven’t thought this through at all.

If anyone wants to check emissions levels or economy of various cars. They're independent tests but they've sorts removed the hard numbers in some cases in favour of a score. For instance in Air Quality they don't give NOx or PN numbers but a score that relates to which euro levels it actually meets.

Seems relevent here if people are interested.

BCC are idiots and it got worse when we had the previous mayor Ferguson. The new one is a decent chap but they are in a spin and haven't got a clue.
The area proposed has a lot of businesses inside it and they have not worked out that staff and suppliers will move. We are already looking to move from the centre near to the M5 at Filton which is in South Glos and has no plans to drive businesses away.

In Broadmead shops are emptying and even though Cribbs has some empty it is clear that they are having more success there. Will the free parking easy access be anything to do with this.

It is an ill considered plan without any other options. They say everyone will benefit, if you can afford to pay you will have empty roads. Need to get to the hospital not if you only go on a bus.

We moved here over 30 years ago, then they had been planning an underground system for at least 15 before we arrived. Since then we now have spent millions on plans but we have the metro bus with a few routes and some bus lanes. The new mayor once again is saying we will have this and people will have a choice, not a chance.

In the time we have been here I cannot remember anytime when the area near Temple meads has not had roadworks.

You're not wrong. Bristol is properly anti-car. The Mall must be rubbing their hands and planning more parking spaces.

Do you remember the flyover that went from Temple Way to St Mary Redcliffe? It all went tits up when (for some stupid reason) the concil got rid of that.

With ref the underground, ATA (Advanced Transport for Avon) wasn’t actually an underground (geology all wrong) but a comprehensive tram network. From what I remember Dawn Primarolo put the mockers on it for some reason.

NOX, diesel vs petrol



As you can see, even the newest diesels are filthy compared to older petrols.

The flyover was great, it really made a huge difference to congestion in that area.

I recall that Dawn Primarolo objected to the ATA because the plan was for North Somerset and Bristol City councils to pay for the Portishead line to be reopened as the first phase and money from this would help to pay for it to be rolled out across the city. Dawn objected to Bristol Council paying for a line which only helped North Somerset residents (I may be wrong so happy to be corrected).

I gave up on driving into Bristol when the South Bristol Link Road added 20 minutes to my commute. Gave up on eating In Clifton restaurants following the residents parking schemes too.

It’s not like there’s any viable alternatives either. The LA park and ride has now rerouted thanks to the metro bus and takes 30 minutes to reach the centre. It works for those going to temple meads but not the centre.

I commute by bike but the bus lanes are full of spilt diesel and old polluting buses, the cycle lanes are also dangerous. There’s no good option for getting into Bristol, all are bad.

I avoid Bristol at all costs now, will shop at the mall or online and try restaurants in Portishead, Clevedon or Weston instead.

This sounds depressingly similar to Brighton where a local columnist once wrote something on the lines of that if you scratched a Council member there was a university connection underneath. Expect Caroline Lucas (constituency stuffed with Sussex and Brighton Uni types) to jump on the bandwagon any moment

The South Bristol link road is a joke. Traffic used to flow out of Cumberland Basin towards Weston quite well. Now there are queues back to the swing bridge most nights.
