Bristol and Diesel ban

Assuming all approved, how long do you think this will take to introduce and get the correct signs, road markings and cameras in place?

I was concerned about this last year giving my work and home locations/routine but given Covid has changed everything I’m not really sure this will bother me too much now.

I will watch the public consultation with interest though. Many businesses with HGV are in the zone, the hospital, huge amount of traffic heading down the Portway, away football crowds (if we get back to normal) and traffic for shopping coming down the m32. Not sure if my car will be included in the charge but for the few times I do travel it will be cheaper to pay the charge than spend £1000s on a different car.

The Mrs and kids travel to failand area every day in a an old diesel xc90 through the city so I’ll probably have to swap that out but I can use that for commute and head out through east Bristol to the Bath junction. Taking my fumes through Saltford, Bitton and Yate..... wouldn’t want to live there with this news !

They are going to have to make exemptions, there is no way trucks are going to deliver and collect stuff in CAX D and get stung £100 each way.

Round here (Manchester) they started installing the cameras about 2 months ago on the QT.
They have gone for a more covert style mounted on existing light poles.
It seems no one has noticed.

Having done a total of about 9 years of the last 20 working in Bristol, I am hugely, hugely glad that I don't have to go there any more and hope I never have to again. I genuinely don't get the love for the place. If I were Clifton, I'd be gathering support for a new Brexit.

I wonder if the council have considered that many businesses are currently considering how much office space they are going to need going forward and the answer might well be less in the centre of Bristol than they had before lockdown, even before this announcement.

Have you seen the difference in braking systems between newer wagons and older? I saw a YouTube video yesterday 38.5tonne payload both doing 80km/h - the new truck stopped 14 meters sooner and where the newer one had stopped the older truck was still doing something like 25-30km/h.

Plus better fuel too.

A shame you cannot buy PHEV wagons so EV in town and derv outside.

With those sort of costs (£1,200 per day) would it not be cheaper just to relocate out of these areas?

Unless the council get kicked in the nuts by business moving out and leaving them with nothing, they'll simply carry on doing this sort of thing.

Its the same with all trucks, dare I say most cars too. The newer the vehicle the better the safety systems.
Our trucks are c.2007-2010 and are fit for purpose and whilst not the most recent tech they pass the same brake test that a brand new truck has to take. And our vehicles have to have that brake test every 7 weeks.....

The issue is the customer. Our average sale is £120 excl vat.
Even then people complain we are expensive.

I will give you an example. A member of my family wanted some of our products. I quoted a price (bit of discount for F&F). They did not buy off us in the end, because they found it 30% cheaper still from one of our competitors - who is based 50 miles away.

They turned up in their 1995 vehicle, spewed a load of oil on their path and dropped their inferior product in a massive pile outside their house. Zero H&S, massive carbon footprint and of course..... the only payment method was CASH... <cough>

You pay for what you get. And this is the kicker.

The family member who did this is one of these eco warrior types who is constantly talking about pollution and what it is doing to their poor kids lungs and they are going to build an eco house in the country to get out of the city. They will post about living wage on facebook that it should be £15.hr and we should all be working a 3 day week on 30k a year etc etc.

Yet THEY wont pay for a local company that pays a good wage to its staff, does a professional job, employs local people and provides better quality goods and pays rates to the local council and VAT and corp tax to the government... because it hits them in the pocket they would rather save 30% out of their pocket...

That, IME, is the problem with 90% of people.

Will definitely change the way I visit Bristol, I'm normally a nip in and park in trenchard / cabot type of person. Also changes how evening activities will happen. Lots of people park in trenchard and go to the hippodrome / Colston Hall (sorry, The "Beacon") / the O2, so mere metres away. Long Ashton park and ride isn't going to run at 10pm and frankly I want to jump back in the car and drive home without pissing around waiting for a bus. Guess it just add £9 to every visit.

I love Bristol and always wanted to live there, even as a child, but lately it is starting to feel a bit like a living social media feed - its getting quite the politically correct place to be, with opportunity to offend at every moment.

This exactly. Our lease is up later this year and with this CAZ due in October, just as we are hopefully returning to the office, why would we renew ? The Green's will say good as it's more traffic and pollution out of the centre, but businesses were dying in the centre before Covid and with this as well, it will become a city of student digs and Gregg's. Good look getting to the BRI too !

Pure stupidity.... in normal times I work in the centre, commuting in from sleepy North Somerset village and either park in the outer suburbs or Long Ashton P & R, pop my bike out of the boot and am at my desk in under 10 mins - I wholly avoid the "zone" by car but obviously go straight through it by bike - generally the only vehicles that prompt me to cough up a lung being the buses....
My employers being one of the few entirely prepared for wfh have realised that we function better than ever out of the office, so we'll never be returning to full time office residency - chopping another 120 and further hollowing out the city centre.......nice little earner - temporarily for moronic Marvin and his mates....hoping he'll be booted out shortly...

Marvin and the red trousered one before him seem intent in turning Bristol into a pedestrian/ cyclist utopia, that I'm sure will look lovely, but won't actually function as a commercial city centre. It will be a nice place to visit, assuming you have suitable transport, but I wouldn't want to work or live there

Year on year Bristol ‘improves’ and gradually gets harder to live in/near every time it does.

Except it won't be a nice place to visit, because all the nice places to visit will have closed down because no one will go there. It'll just be a big student dorm with nothing but a transient population.

I hate the city now, and wish I'd never invested there. Worst decision I ever made.

They really are going to be in for hard times in Bristol. There are massive offices around Temple meads which will never get filled again as many are now happy to work from home.

On top of that who in their right minds will pay a charge to drive into Bristol and pay, then pay to park and shop in Broadmead and Cabots when you can drive to Cribbs and do it all there free.

Bristol will have plenty of places for the crusty's to park their vans, as they never pay anything, and Marvin will slap himself on the back as income falls as businesses move and say it is only fair to allow these people to live there

When our lease is up we will be moving out probably to Filton where it is cheaper and South Glos are not hell bent on destroying the economic growth or apologising for the events of hundreds of years ago.

I am at a loss why Labour and Marvin continue to get elected when they have achieved nothing and done so much harm. And yet I still love living in the area as it has so much to offer, so long as you hate cars and hate wealth creators
