Just been through the M5 diversion route. Cars are OK as they are going off at J19, down the A369 to LA then the A370 to Weston, so they don't hit the CAZ. Trucks though are being sent off at J18, down the Portway to the A370, so straight through the CAZ.

Beyond me why they send folk that wish to continue down the M5 on those diversions. I would come off J19 and go Portishead - Clevedon M5, artic or car.

The official motorway diversion routes should IIRC use A roads where possible and practical, which is why the route is so convoluted. Portishead > Clevedon being the B3124. I do wonder if post CAZ the official route will be changed to B3124. Most car satnav's will pick the B3124 in preference to the official route.

Lots of people were coming off early and going down the A38. That was very busy earlier.

According to marvellous, you won't get charged if there is an official diversion and you are on that route.

This required the flattening of a village called Charlton Hayes to lengthen the runway. the Brabazon flew but none were ever sold
Final off topic - what I have heard (from my father & other ex-RR employees at the time) the Brabazon took off well within the length of the old run way so Charlton Hayes need not have been demolished. However, a worker was killed in the Brabazon hanger when he fell asleep in the concertina doors and they opened them...
The detail of the flight take off is spot on. It took off three quarters down the old runway, did a flight over the estuary landed and was never flown again. It was the classic British error, build a huge prop plane just as the jet engine Comet took to the skies.

It was true that a worker was crushed after he slept in the door fold. It was the biggest single span building in the world when built

Took off with only a light load & low fuel on board?

So we just need to rely on the automated ticketing systems being updated in response to a diversion. I'm sure that'll work well and no one will forget to push the required button.

I still haven't replaced my euro 5 diesel yet. I live in a town to the North of Bristol. In my case it's easy enough to just do the things I'd previously have done in town elsewhere, so unless the other half is driving her compliant car, I'll simply stay away (which I guess is the point and proves it works!)

Hopefully that can be conveyed to people being diverted at the time, otherwise there will be lots of them trying to do U turns.

Drove into Bristol the other day, still grid lock at peak times. This isn’t going to work…..

Depends where you 'drove into' smile

There are so many roadworks at the moment it's really difficult to tell - but it's 100% evident that once the road closure reason is over BCC see that as opportunity to implement something more permanent in place as the inconvenience has become acceptable

Walking/driving around the centre I really don't see many (if any) non compliant cars. Plenty of vans and trucks doing business though.

I drive in every day and the traffic is definitely much lighter. Admittedly it anyway hadn’t recovered to pre-Covid levels, but now I just drive straight in with no real congestion at all.

Into the clean air zone though?

Plenty of arterial routes are a nightmare atm- granted the main ones aren't - but the areas in the clean air zone aren't great

Obviously not Bristol (But they tend to follow each other)

BANES consulting on charging Euro6 HGV's to enter CAZ. Think we all know where this is going.

If they're Euro6 compliant though, which was the standard that was applied when the CAZ was setup, why the about-face now ?

https://beta.bathnes.gov.uk/class-n3-euro-6-diesel...

It's a 'consultation' so.... a foregone conclusion.

And yet the report concludes it will have very little meaningful impact, so is it just about revenue and not clean air ?

Yep that is pretty much how i now picture Bristol.

I moved out of Bristol to Clevedon 40ish years ago and there is pretty much nothing that draws me there. In the last 5 years or so i have only ever been to Fowlers motorcycles, which you can still just about get to without going into the CAZ. I also popped into the BRI for a stent but an ambulance took me there and back to N Somerset. biggrin

I very rarely go in now. I'd rather go to Nailsea if I need anything (although I will be in Clevedon later for a visit to Proper Job). My wife has an office in Queen Square, but tries to go there as little as possible. Sorry to hear about your BRI visit. Hope the stent is working well.

All good here thanks RED. The stent is doing a grand job and it made me give up that work lark. bounce
Enjoy Proper Job, you could now potentially feature in the Council or Krap parking posts. wink

Yup - in the 6 months since its implementation, the cafes and restaurants round the docks haven't had over 2 grand of my money because I don't have a CAZ compliant car.
