We stayed at villa at Centara, you get your own Villa with a plunge pool, facilities were good, different restaurants and a short walk (or boat) to the town. Think of a mid range Banyon Tree set up.

It was 10 years ago so can’t vouch for recent experience

Have fun, there’s some great scenery and places to see.

Beach terrace hotel, Ao Nang, now the Days. Access direct to the beach, been staying there 25 years, just refurbished, only hotel with direct access on to Ao Nang beach, I was there last weekend, 30 pounds a night BB for 2, I ride up there two three times a year, much the best place, it's on the N side of Ao Nang so you can walk No to the next beach and the night Market. Its great for kids as you can sit at breakfast and the can access the beach from there so you can watch them all the time, free off streets car parking.

I would recommend staying on railey beach (Nat park) rather than Ao Nang town. As you can watch the sunset after the last boat has gone back to AN from the National park:

stayed at the sand sea resort about 4-5 years ago. The refurbed wing had really good rooms.

Railey beach is spectacular

Not to argue with Alfaman, I've staid in Ralay many times over the last 25 years, it was fantastic, but Railay today is nothing like 5 years ago, it is as commercial as Ao Nang now, (since they allowed two story building and swimming pools it has changed dramatically), so to me you get all the disadvantages of being busy and foreigners without the advantages of loads of places to eat, plenty of easily arranged trips etc. My kids who have spent the last 25 years holidaying in Thailand actually refuse to stay at Railay these days, for that reason, Princes Cave beach which was fantastic has been taken over by the hotels and they frown on you if you are not a guest Railay West beach is not good for swimming any more because of the number of long tail boats in the center and the coral on the South end, Ton Sai beach, between Railay west and Ao Nang is still OK, but remote unless you are into the climbing.

Of course Ao Nang has changed, it's full of Pizza and Indian restaurants these days, and the best Thai restaurant is now German owned, which is a bit disheartening.

If you want beach access make sure the hotel you pick does have it, lots of the places around Ao Nang use the name 'beach, resort but have road between them and the beach which is no good with kids,

if you want to go some where quieter and nicer go to Ko Lanta, about 50 Km to the south east, almost as easy to get to from Krabbie airport, but not as compact a Ao Nang, you need to move around by taxi not walking. North

Do not hire a bike in Ao Nang, unless you can ride, I was there last week as a guest of the local bike club the statistics for foreigners on scooters is horrendous, but not publicized, I have an Aussie mate who hires bikes he insists on a western bike license, it cost him business but saves him hassle if there is an accident, but most people will hire to any one.

Thanks chaps, budget is alot lower than previous trips because my kids (21 & 19)now require separate rooms so It’s 3 rooms I have to stump up for.
We are taking my father in law and wife’s aunt so also need to take them into account, things we have never considered like walking distances, gradient etc.
This hloiday is turning out to need the planning of a military operation!

Was there in 2001. Are the locals still using the long tail boats with unsilenced car engines as power source?

Beautiful chilled out beach, then a few of these longtails set off at full bore and the peace is shattered into tiny bits.

Send me a pm if you want some budget places, when I ride up I pay 10 pounds a night, so I know a few,
Don't worry about breakfast, English breakfast is 120 baht a head, with coffee, all over the place, in the night market on the beach N of Ao Nang you can eat for 100 baht a head. A Tuk Tuk is 50 baht a person a journey, so low budget can be done.
20 pounds a night for two is very easy, but look at the Days it is fantastic pool, breakfast and you don't need transport, I really can't say how good it is.

Try Chattchada House if you want a budget, owned by an Aussie, he does great breakfast, spotless but you will need a tuk tuk. I use it a lot for breakfast, he is a biker real nice chap who will help you arrange any tours you want.
