A genuine mystery object, I dont know what this object was used for.

What I can see which raises questions.

1. You can see holes on the frame as if it was to be stood up

2. The wood carver has used roman numerals, why not the simpler 1,2,3 and what is the significance of the alternate numbering side to side of the central R.

3. It may have something to do with aviation or engineering, I thought that the numbers might be a firing order for a V12, for a plug or pushrod rack, but they are usually labelled 1A 6B 4A 3B 2A etc

4. It is quite ornate for an industrial piece which suggests a domestic or commercial purpose

Any usefull ideas or comments would be welcome

There appears to be a part missing below the cut outs,it seems something fitted into the rectangular holes at the ends. The R in the middle is the least worn? Can you tell whether metal rubbed against the wood?any metal residue-brass/copper?

It has 12 numbers and uses IIII instead of IV for 4, which says to me it's something to do with keeping track of things over time as per a 12hr clock face.

All the numbers added together equal 78, the R could be roman for 80.

Thanks for the replies.

There is no sign of metal rubbing, not much in the way of any wear and tear.

If it is significant, the same numbering is on the back of the board, over each minature arch.

I dont know the size of it, from the stonework behind it I am guessing at less than 24 inches in length,

Pairs of numbers, e.g. 1&2, 3&4, 5&6, and so on "face" or oppose each other across the center R.

I'm thinking it's a way of keeping track of something.

Some sort of tool used in bakery. Bakers dozen?or candle making. Maybe a church instrument of sorts.

The retangular holes look like some kind of legs/stands were inserted.

I reckon it the business end of a mechanical system used to call servants/staff to a specific room, in a large house!

It looks to me as if the middle letter R was originally a P(=400 in roman).

I thought that, but most images I found of those had the bells mounted on spiral springs.

One thing I noticed was the hole for 'R' is more circular than the others - I wonder if that signifies anything?
